The city of Cairns, recognized as Australia’s nature capital, is distinguished for its unparalleled access to the Great Barrier Reef and the World Heritage-listed Daintree Rainforest, which establishes it as a prime destination for travelers to this tropical region.
One of the most breathtaking experiences during my time in Queensland, Australia, was the journey on the Kuranda Scenic Railway from Cairns to Kuranda. This train trip not only takes you deep into the ancient and lush rainforest of the Wet Tropics, complemented by striking waterfalls and awe-inspiring landscapes, but also offers a glimpse into the region’s rich history and awe-inspiring landscapes. It’s a journey that combines scenic beauty with a touch of nostalgia, making it a must-do when visiting Cairns.
Stepping Back in Time
Upon, reaching the historic Cairns Railway Station, and boarding the train, I was instantly struck by the charm of the vintage carriages. The polished wooden interiors, brass fittings, and old-world ambiance transport you back to the early 1900s when the railway was originally constructed. The Kuranda Scenic Railway was built in the late 19th century to connect the mining town of Herberton with the coast, and it’s easy to imagine the early travelers making their way through the dense rainforest aboard these same carriages.

I was greeted by the sight of the exquisite Goldclass carriage, a luxurious compartment that promised a journey filled with comfort and elegance. Boarding the Goldclass carriage for my trip, I was instantly struck by the opulence and attention to detail that surrounded me.
The Journey Begins
As the train pulled out of Cairns, the excitement of the journey truly began. The two hour train journey up to Kuranda Village, a village in the rainforest up in the mountains. The plush seating and the tasteful decor contributed to an atmosphere of refined indulgence. The first few kilometers rolled past the suburbs of Cairns, where I managed to catch a glimpse of the local life and architecture, before the scenery expands to encompass mangrove swamps and lush sugarcane fields. As the train continued on its journey, it made a short stop at Freshwater station, allowing more passengers to board, which add to the vibrant energy of the experience.

Soon after departing Freshwater Station, the real adventure began, the landscape began to transform, so as the Goldclass service. From the moment we left Freshwater station, I felt welcomed and well taken care of. The onboard menu for drinks choice, accompanied by a variety of snacks, truly enhanced the overall experience. It was delightful to see that everything was inclusive, and as I settled in for the journey, my first drink was served, adding an extra touch of luxury to the trip. During the train journey to Kuranda, the Goldclass attendant made sure to give exemplary service to all passengers. Lush greenery enveloped the train as we entered the Barron Gorge National Park, part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Wet Tropics of Queensland.
The slow pace of the train allowed me to soak in every detail – the dense vegetation, towering trees, and the call of birds hidden within the forest. As, I gazed out of the window, taking in the breathtaking landscapes that unfolded before my eyes. It was the beginning of an unforgettable voyage, filled with the allure of discovery and the charm of old-world sophistication.
As the train chugs further along, I was treated to breathtaking views of lush rainforests, cascading waterfalls, and stunning panoramas of the surrounding mountains. The railway’s rich history and the engineering marvel of the route add an extra layer of fascination to this scenic adventure. As both nature enthusiast and a history buff, this was a unique and immersive way to explore the tropical beauty of Far North Queensland. The Kuranda Scenic Railway trip offers an unforgettable experience for travelers of all ages. Here I am, sitting back, relaxing, and letting the rhythmic sound of the train and the captivating scenery transported me to a place of serenity and awe.
Immersing myself in the heritage of this iconic railway, which dates back to the late 1800s and was born out of a remarkable feat of engineering, overcoming challenging terrain to connect Cairns to the Tablelands. The historic carriages exude an old-world charm, took me back to a bygone era while offering modern comfort. The commentary on board provided fascinating insights into the construction of the railway and the surrounding environment, enhancing the journey with a wealth of knowledge.
As we ascend to higher altitudes, I continued to relish in the beverages, snacks and stunning Stoney Creek Falls, while enjoying the breathtaking views. The renowned Stoney Creek Falls, mere meters away from the railway, was a sight to behold. The cascading water created a mesmerizing display that captivates all who are fortunate enough to witness it. The proximity to the railway adds a touch of charm to the scene, highlighting the intersection of natural beauty and human ingenuity. Every passengers were treated to the harmonious coexistence of the stunning waterfall and the railway, creating a unique and unforgettable experience. As we continued our journey, lead us to the breathtaking vistas of the sprawling landscapes below and the panoramic views extending to the Barrier Reef and the coastline.

As we journeyed along the tracks, the lush greenery embraced us, creating a serene atmosphere that seemed to transport us to a different world. The stunning and jaw-dropping views were almost on every corner we turned and natural beauty captivating every passenger on board. As I enjoyed more drinks, this gave me a platform for fresh air and photo opportunities. Looking out from the window to gasp the breathtaking views and going through some of the finest scenery in Australia was just an amazing experience. All I simply have to do was to sit back and relax in my comfortable seat as scenes glide by my window.

A Highlight of the Journey: Barron Falls
Midway through the journey, the train stopped at Barron Falls lookout, and I stepped out to witness one of the most spectacular. The sheer magnitude of Barron Falls, cascading down the rocky cliffs into the deep gorge below, was mesmerizing. The view of the waterfall was incredibly beautiful and it was definitely an experience that no-one could take away from me. Although the waterfall is at its most powerful during the wet season, even in the dry months, the sight is still impressive.
Stopping there for 10-minutes not only gave us time to stretch our legs, take photos, and absorb the sheer natural beauty of the surroundings but to capture some of the stunning views of the waterfall and surrounding greenery rainforest and immersing ourselves in the awe-inspiring surroundings. The sound of the rushing water and the mist rising from the falls made it feel like we were deep within an untouched wilderness, far away from the bustling city of Cairns. Also, the sight of the powerful waterfall created a symphony for the senses, leaving an indelible impression on all who were fortunate enough to experience it.

Arriving in Kuranda Train Station
The gentle sway of the train, the laughter of fellow travelers, and the attentive service provided by the Goldclass attendant all contributed to making this voyage a memorable one. As we neared our destination, the excitement grew, knowing that the breathtaking wonders of Kuranda awaited us, promising an adventure filled with discoveries and delights.
After about an hour and a half, the train arrived in Kuranda, a quaint village nestled in the rainforest. Known as “The Village in the Rainforest,” Kuranda is a hub for arts, crafts, and markets. We were welcomed by impeccably maintained, verdant tropical gardens. Local residents consider this station a prominent attraction in the area. Our departure, accompanied by a farewell from our host, provided a fitting conclusion to this extraordinary train expedition. Taking the time to appreciate this exquisite station enveloped by tropical flora allowed me to immerse myself in the invigorating rainforest ambiance before traversing into the township of Kuranda Village.

Kuranda Village
A leisurely 15-minute stroll from the train station led me to the edge of the township. For those looking to explore more of the rainforest, Kuranda also offers wildlife attractions like the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary, Birdworld and the Kuranda Koala Gardens. I decided to wander through the Rainforestation Nature Park, where I learned more about the Indigenous culture and explored the lush tropical surroundings. Here, I had the opportunity to embrace a Koala or feed a kangaroo.
I spent the afternoon exploring the Kuranda Markets, fill with local art, handmade crafts, and unique souvenirs. The village has a laid-back, bohemian vibe, with plenty of cafes where you can enjoy a cup of coffee surrounded by nature. Also, includes restaurants, food stalls, and more.

One of the most remarkable aspects of the trip was the narration provided by the onboard commentary. It offered insights into the history of the railway’s construction and the hardships faced by the workers who carved the track through the rugged mountains. Understanding the human effort behind the railway made the journey all the more meaningful.
The Return Journey
For my return trip to Cairns, I opted to take the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway, which offered a completely different perspective of the landscape. Gliding over the treetops, I could look down into the dense rainforest canopy and see the winding path the train had taken earlier in the day. The Skyrail also offers stops at Red Peak and Barron Falls lookout points, where you can get out and explore the forest on short boardwalk trails.
My Thoughts
The Kuranda Scenic Railway offers a perfect combination of history, natural beauty, and cultural experiences. Whether you’re a history buff, a nature lover, or just someone looking for a peaceful escape into the rainforest, this train journey is an unforgettable highlight of any trip to Cairns. I left Kuranda feeling enriched by the stories of the past and inspired by the incredible landscapes I had witnessed along the way.
