As a child, I always harbored a strong inclination towards exploration and venturing into new territories. During my adolescent years, I had the opportunity to journey to Australia, various Pacific islands, and select locations in Papua New Guinea, my country of upbringing. Undoubtedly, these experiences planted the seed of wanderlust within me, a sentiment that I was able to fully embrace upon immigrating to Australia. The process of immersing myself in a new culture and society opened the doors to numerous other countries, allowing me to encounter remarkable individuals and witness breathtaking wildlife, natural marvels, and picturesque landscapes.
I’ve been all over Australia, spent many months in North America and holiday in several destinations in the Caribbean, including Jamaica, Cuba, Mexico and Pacific island nations. But I’ve always wanted to go to Europe, especially Italy.
Exploring Australia was a truly memorable experience, from the bustling cities to the breathtaking natural wonders like the Great Barrier Reef and the Outback. North America offered a diverse range of experiences, from the stunning landscapes of Canada to the vibrant energy of cities like New York and Los Angeles. The Caribbean, with its idyllic beaches and rich cultural heritage, provided a perfect setting for relaxation and adventure.
The allure of Europe has always captivated my heart. Italy’s profound historical legacy, delightful cuisine, and breathtaking art and architecture make it an indispensable destination. The United Kingdom’s fusion of contemporary elegance and enduring customs has always piqued my interest, especially the charm of bustling London and the historical allure of Edinburgh. France, with its romantic atmosphere, renowned art, and culinary excellence, is a dream for any traveler. The picturesque alpine vistas of Switzerland and the iconic tulip fields of the Netherlands further enhance the appeal of this European adventure.
Initially, I was apprehensive about booking a bus tour, as the prospect of being confined with strangers and a rigid itinerary was daunting. Nonetheless, I ultimately decided to embark on a 15-day Europe Tour, as I planned to independently explore more of Europe after the tour concluded. The tour enabled me to visit major destinations such as Rome, Paris, London, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Germany.
I choose coach travel for my first solo trip to Europe and it was a cautious and thoughtful decision. Traveling in a group certainly provided a sense of safety and security, especially when exploring unfamiliar territories. It’s completely normal to feel apprehensive about navigating a new city, even within my own country, and anticipating potential stressors. By opting for a guided tour, I was able to relinquish the worries of logistical arrangements and instead focused on savoring the enriching experiences that Europe has to offer. Taking comfort in the fact that my tour encompassed hotel accommodations, meals, and activities allowed me to embark on my journey with ease and peace of mind. It’s delightful that all I had to do was arrange my flights, secure my pre and post-tour accommodation, and prepare for my adventure. This proactive approach ensured that I could fully immerse myself in the journey, creating lasting memories without the burden of planning every detail.
Getting there?
My Great European Road Trip started with a long flight from Brisbane, Australia to Heathrow Airport in London, with a short layover in Bangkok before arriving in London at approximately 5 AM. Upon arrival, I made use of my London Pass Card to take the Heathrow Express train from the airport to London Paddington station, and then transferred to Kensington station using the underground tube. Fortunately, my hotel was conveniently located within a 15-minute walk from the station.

Since arriving in London, I experienced heavy traffic and the cold, dreary weather for the first time. I had been in London for two days prior to my bus journey, and I had already begun to appreciate the city’s high-end offerings. The London Pass card proved to be invaluable, providing a tailored sightseeing package for visitors like me, granting access to top attractions in London while minimizing the time, expenses, and hassle involved. Despite enjoying London’s hospitality, I was starting to grow tired of the cold weather and couldn’t wait to leave the dreariness behind.
The road trip
London (United Kingdom)
After two days of hectic London sightseeing, the next I made my way to the allocated location in the early morning, eager and excited for the day’s journey ahead. Upon arrival, I was warmly greeted by our knowledgeable guide/driver and fellow enthusiastic travelers. Following a round of introductions and detailed instructions for our upcoming adventure, we eagerly boarded our comfortable bus and set out on our exhilarating tour beyond the bustling streets of London.

We began our scenic journey, bidding adieu to London’s bustling center and the often gloomy weather that characterizes the city. As we ventured through the picturesque UK countryside, we were treated to mesmerizing views of sprawling fields adorned with vibrant hues of canola, sunflower, and other picturesque blooms. Our path led us to the historic port town of Dover, situated in the county of Kent in the idyllic southeast of England. As we arrived at the charming town, we were captivated by its coastal allure and rich maritime heritage.
Ferry ~ across English channel
The highlight of this leg of our journey was the mesmerizing ferry crossing of the English Channel from Dover to Calais in France. Our anticipation and excitement soared as we embarked on this picturesque voyage across one of the world’s most iconic bodies of water. The Strait of Dover, an iconic stretch of the English Channel, provided a breathtaking backdrop for our journey, offering glimpses of the enduring connection between England and France.

Our first night in the beautiful city of Amsterdam was filled with delightful discoveries and unforgettable experiences, setting the stage for the adventures that awaited us on the rest of our remarkable journey through Europe.
Armsterdam (Netherlands)
A few hours of ferry ride across the English Channel to Calais, despite minor rough seas, allowed us to disembark and board our waiting coach for a long road journey to Amsterdam. Amsterdam, renowned for its uniqueness and colorful flavors, is famously known for its Red-Light District. This marked the introduction to the diverse flavors of Europe, establishing an intriguing start to the tour and offering a glimpse of what lay ahead.

Amsterdam, the capital city of the Netherlands, is situated in North-West Europe, bordered by Germany to the east, Belgium to the south, and the North Sea to the north and west. This city offers a complex tapestry of experiences, from its well-known Red Light District and tolerated cannabis cafes to a wealth of cultural and historical attractions. Our curated tour of Amsterdam encompassed prominent landmarks such as the Red Light District, renowned for its establishments, as well as a leisurely Canal cruise to gain a unique perspective of the city. Following this, there was an opportunity for independent exploration or participation in other optional activities, culminating in a delightful dinner at a local restaurant before returning to our accommodation.
Cologne (Germany)
The following day, we departed from Amsterdam and proceeded with our coach journey to the city of Cologne in Germany. Cologne stands as the largest city in the German federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Historically, in medieval times, Cologne held the distinction of being the largest city of the Holy Roman Empire. Presently, it is recognized as a prominent center for media, tourism, and business within the nation. Additionally, it is renowned for being one of the most progressive cities in Germany.
Arriving in the early hours of the day, I had the opportunity to explore the city on my own. With a penchant for history, historical monuments, shopping, unique cathedrals, and nature, I spent a significant amount of time visiting Cologne’s famous Gothic Cathedral. Subsequently, I indulged in a shopping spree at renowned brand clothing shops such as Paul & Shark, Gant, Tommy Hilfiger, Ralph & Lauren, and more. The city proved to be a haven for eager shoppers, and I found myself thoroughly engrossed in the experience.
As the day progressed, we embarked on a serene sunset cruise along the Rhine River, which afforded breathtaking vistas of the Lorelei rock, hilltop castles, half-timbered wine villages, and terraced vineyards. The experience was indelible, leaving a lasting impression on me and evoking a sense of romance for others.

Innsbruck (Austria)
After experiencing the captivating sunset cruise along the Rhine River and exploring the abundant shopping options in the lively and progressive city of Cologne, we proceeded with our journey to the city of Innsbruck in Austria. Innsbruck serves as the capital of Austria’s western state of Tyrol and resides in the Alps, serving as a longstanding hub for winter sports. Renowned for its Imperial and contemporary architectural marvels, this city boasts a rich cultural and historical legacy.
Not all travels unfold seamlessly. Throughout our journey, we encountered a range of weather conditions, some of which were rather severe. In particular, the weather in Innsbruck was exceptionally extreme, with freezing temperatures that proved challenging for both myself and fellow Australian travelers unaccustomed to such harsh conditions. This marked my first experience of an intense European winter, having spent most of my life in a tropical climate. Departing from this bitterly cold weather, we forged ahead with our road trip to Venice, Italy.

Venice (Italy)
Leaving Innsbruck, we journey to the captivating city of Venice, rich with history and culture. The city, located in the Veneto region of northern Italy, is uniquely situated on a lagoon in the Adriatic Sea, spread across over 100 small islands. Venice’s charm lies in its intricate network of canals and bridges, adorned with elegant Renaissance and Gothic palaces. Our exploration included a boat ride to St. Mark’s Square and a visit to a traditional glass-blowing demonstration. The optional gondola trip, accompanied by the soothing melodies of a local troubadour, provided an enchanting experience. Venice’s beauty and allure truly left a lasting impression on me at every moment of our visit.

Rome (Italy)
From the city of canals – Venice, we continued to Italy’s capital- Rome. This “eternal city” is steeped in history. Rome is a sprawling, cosmopolitan, vibrantly alive and exciting city and absolutely unique. A city that comes with influential art, architecture and culture that is on display. Ancient ruins such as the Forum and the Colosseum evoke the power of the former Roman Empire. From Vatican City, headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church, has St. Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Museums, which house masterpieces such as Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel frescoes to semi ruins of the Colosseum, known as the Flavian Amphitheatre kept me mesmerising.

I couldn’t think of a city as inspiring as Rome. I was completely captivated by St. Peter’s Square and Basilica, the Spanish Steps, the iconic Colosseum, the largest amphitheater ever built, Circus Maximus, and the Trevi Fountain. Rome is a city that offers an endless list of major historical sights that are incredibly amazing. Exploring this city with limited time is impossible, as there is so much to do and learn.
Florence (Italy)
From Rome, the capital city of Italy, to the regional city of Florence, located in central Italy and serving as the capital of the Tuscan region. Encircled by rolling hills adorned with villas, vineyards, and orchards, Florence stands as a cosmopolitan city that has retained its historical essence. Undoubtedly, Florence holds the central position in the Italian Renaissance and is revered as one of Italy’s most culturally rich, artistically significant, and upscale cities. For those with a keen interest in Renaissance culture, history, and art, this city is a must-visit destination. Among its most significant and exquisite landmarks are the Dome, one of the largest cathedrals globally, the Uffizi museum, and numerous other attractions that draw in countless visitors.

Lucerne (Switzerland)
Leaving the beautiful city of Florence, we crossed the border into Switzerland for a two-day stay in the Swiss Alps, specifically the city of Lucerne. Upon our mid-morning arrival, the remainder of the day was at our disposal to commence our exploration of this charming town situated on the Reuss River. Our itinerary included a visit to Chapel Bridge, the Water Tower, and Jesuit Church.
The following day, I embarked on a special excursion to Mt. Pilatus, one of the region’s main attractions. Ascending nearly 7000 feet (2,132 m) for a breathtaking panoramic view of central Switzerland was truly exhilarating. The vista surpassed my expectations and stood unrivaled by towering landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower in Paris and the Empire State Building in New York. It was a truly extraordinary experience.

Paris (France)
For the final stretch of our European road trip, we concluded our journey in Paris before heading back from Calais to the Dover port and continuing on to London by coach. Paris, the capital of France, stands as a prominent European city and a global hub for art, fashion, gastronomy, and culture. Renowned for landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower and the 12th-century Gothic Notre-Dame Cathedral, the city is celebrated for its cafe culture and upscale boutiques along the Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré.
Apart from attending the amazing Moulin Rouge show, the city lights of Paris, Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame took my breath away. Here I get to enjoy my city tour, exploring all the main sites such as the Lourve, Champs Elysees, Notre Dame and along the River Seine. This, Paris’s famous iconic building, seeing it on television, travel brochures and magazines gives you a different perspective than authentically standing on top of it. The stunning views of Paris from above were incredibly breathtaking but the night lights create an even more romantic atmosphere.

The undeniable allure of Europe reveals itself as one journeys through its varied landscapes. Each city and village visited fosters a deep sense of attachment. Europe stands as a continent steeped in history, culture, and a plethora of experiences waiting to be discovered. Whether it’s witnessing the grandeur of Buckingham Palace in London, strolling through the renowned Red-light District in Amsterdam, admiring St. Marks Square in Venice, exploring the Colosseum and Vatican City in Rome, taking in the awe-inspiring vistas from atop Mt. Pilatus in Lucerne, or beholding the stunning panoramas of Paris from the pinnacle of the Eiffel Tower, every moment captures the essence of Europe in all its magnificence.
Strangers becoming friends
Upon reflection, I realized that the magic of that European Bus Tour lay not just in the stunning sights we beheld or the charming towns and cities we explored, but in the beautiful connections that were forged among a group of diverse strangers. At the outset, there was a palpable sense of reserve among our fellow travelers, an understandable hesitance to open up to those unfamiliar faces. Yet, as the days unfolded and the gentle encouragement of our tour guide nudged us out of our shells, an incredible transformation took place.
Conversations sparked, laughter filled the air, and friendships blossomed amidst our unique melting pot of nationalities. It was an experience unlike any other, witnessing individuals from over 20 different countries coming together on a single bus, sharing in the joy of discovery and the warmth of human connection. In this mosaic of cultures and backgrounds, we found that regardless of our differences, we were bound by countless common threads that wove us together into a vibrant tapestry of friendship.
As for me, I’ve always found it effortless to connect with others, a true people’s person at heart. The thrill of meeting new friends, swapping stories, and delving into the shared experiences that unite us is an innate part of my being. This incredible journey reaffirmed my belief that the human spirit knows no boundaries and that within each of us lies the potential to bridge gaps, celebrate diversity, and build lasting connections that transcend geographical borders.
