My road trip in Brief
My Great American Southern Road Trip was an unforgettable experience. The journey commenced in Los Angeles, known as the “City of Angels,” and concluded in New York, often referred to as the “Big Apple.” This comprehensive twenty-five-day tour allowed me to explore Los Angeles and sixteen other destinations in the USA. One of the highlights of this grand Southern journey was the opportunity to visit numerous iconic American destinations along the way. Opting for the coach tour with Contiki Tour Company, designed for young travelers between the ages of 18 and 35, not only enabled me to explore America, but also provided a fantastic and economical way to satisfy my wanderlust. This extensive adventure took me from the glamour of Vegas, through the awe-inspiring Grand Canyon, to the captivating ambiance of New Orleans, and to the vibrant party scene of Miami. Welcome to the Great American Road Trip – an open road experience like no other.

Like every child’s dream, my childhood dream was to visit America one day to see some of the most famous iconic places – from the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Disneyland, New York, the city that never sleeps to Graceland, Elvis Presley’s hometown, and many more. When you think of blockbuster movies, famous country singers, actors and actresses, America comes to mind. Known as one of the most powerful and greatest countries in the world, America has always been on the top of my list of places to visit. My ambition was to explore America in the most fulfilling way, and taking a comprehensive coach trip with Contiki turned out to be the best option for me as I traveled in comfort.

My American dream journey
My American dream journey began with the flight from Cairns to Guam, filled with a sense of anticipation for the adventures that lay ahead. As we soared through the skies, crossing vast oceans and distant islands, each passing moment brought me closer to my American dream. From Guam, we embarked on the next leg of our journey, bound for the enchanting shores of Honolulu. The tranquil beauty of Hawaii greeted us as we touched down on its sun-kissed land, a brief yet unforgettable stopover on the path to my destination. Finally, our flight from Honolulu to Los Angeles marked the culmination of this remarkable odyssey, culminating in the early hours of the morning when the City of Angels welcomed me with its glittering lights and the promise of endless possibilities.
Los angeles
Arriving in Los Angeles in the early hours of the morning from Australia, I found myself navigating the airport, preparing to step out into an unfamiliar city. This marked the beginning of my first significant encounter with American metropolitan life. Nerves tingling, I was struck by the overwhelming sensations all around me. The bustling, unfamiliar environment of a different country enveloped me, presenting a stark contrast to what I was accustomed to. Amidst the crowded and bustling scene, with its distinctly different traffic regulations and pathways, I felt as though I were witnessing a live performance in an open-air theater. Eventually, I secured a cab and made my way to my hotel in Anaheim, Orange County, in close proximity to Disneyland and other prominent attractions. This marked my inaugural solo journey, and I was super excited. During my stay in Los Angeles, I had the opportunity to explore the City of Angels.
On my final night in Anheim, just before the road tour, we had a meet and greet evening, meeting other young travelers and also our guide and driver. It was a great night that came with introducing ourselves to everyone and within minutes, it felt like we have known each for years. As we shared our stories and aspirations, the boundaries between us seemed to melt away, leaving behind a sense of unity and shared experiences. It was a night where strangers became friends, and the memories created would last a lifetime.

Los angeles – las vegas
To kick off our journey, the next day we loaded our luggages in the compartment and only minimal items like backpack and cameras were carried onboard. We set off early, leaving behind the famed city of Angels, Los Angeles and headed for Las Vegas for two days through the Mojave Desert. This was the beginning of my American dream. A straightforward drive from Los Angeles to Las Vegas was approximately about four hours, but with so many curiosities and quirky sights to discover along the way, we departed early to do ourselves a huge favor by allocating lots of time to stop at a few places worth seeing along the way.

Life on the road can get a little one-dimensional. I didn’t want to reach 40 and have to say as I’d done was lookout the window of a tour bus and get drunk.
Bruce Dickinson
Going south, departing from the charming yet modern city of Anaheim, we traversed through the verdant cities and counties of Southern California, gradually giving way to the sight of sun-scorched roadside scenes that ultimately transformed into a desolate landscape, interrupted only by solitary town centers nestled in the heart of the desert. Making a brief stop at Riverside before arriving at the picturesque city of Barstow, where we enjoyed a meal at the historic Barstow Station. Thirty minutes later, we resumed our journey across the expansive Californian desert. The vast, arid expanse seemed to stretch on endlessly. We encountered numerous bustling town centers thriving in the desert, as well as countless abandoned ghost towns from bygone eras. Despite the seemingly harsh and inhospitable nature of the desert, life perseveres for the residents in these regions.
The road stretched out before us, cutting through the arid landscape of the Mojave Desert. As we drove, the stark beauty of the desert unfolded around us, with its rugged terrain and sparse vegetation. We made several stops along the way, captivated by the otherworldly rock formations and the unique flora and fauna that thrived in this harsh environment. Each detour off the main road led us to unexpected wonders, from hidden oases to ancient petroglyphs etched into the rocky outcrops.
One particularly memorable stop was at the iconic Calico Ghost Town, a relic of the silver mining boom of the 1880s. The well-preserved buildings and artifacts offered a glimpse into the Wild West era, as we wandered through the dusty streets and imagined the bustling community that once thrived there. We marveled at the ingenuity of the miners who carved out a living from the unforgiving landscape, and gained a newfound appreciation for the resilience of the early settlers.
As we continued our journey, the sun began to dip towards the horizon, casting a warm glow over the desert, and we knew we were nearing our destination. With the neon lights of Las Vegas shimmering in the distance, we felt a surge of excitement at the adventures that awaited us in the city that never sleeps. Our anticipation grew as we crossed the state line and entered the dazzling realm of Las Vegas, ready to immerse ourselves in the glitz and glamour of this renowned entertainment capital. This was just the beginning of our American odyssey, filled with wonder, discovery, and the promise of unforgettable experiences.
Las Vegas
We proceeded on our journey through the Mojave Desert until we were greeted by the first signs of civilization in Nevada – the casinos. Upon reaching the city of Las Vegas, we were surrounded by neon lights, unmistakably signaling our arrival in the world’s gambling capital. The coach, equipped with panoramic windows, provided the passengers with excellent views of both sides of the road, allowing for uninterrupted filming and photography. Upon arrival, we took a brief cruise along the iconic strip and admired the Vegas signs before reaching our motel. I found myself in Las Vegas, ready to embark on two days of activities, immersing myself in everything the city had to offer. As we danced the night away, I found it to be the perfect opportunity to bond with my Contiki family, Vegas style.

Las Vegas city, built on desert land, is famously known as the ‘Sin City’ and is located in the state of Nevada. With limited time at my disposal, I meticulously planned my itinerary to make the most of Vegas’ captivating and unconventional attractions. I explored various world-renowned landmarks within the city, such as the Bellagio fountain, a Venetian gondola, and even an Egyptian pyramid. For those seeking romance, there were opportunities to witness an Elvis impersonator performing at a wedding ceremony, or even partake in a lighthearted, informal wedding celebration. As night fell, I experienced the exuberant nightlife of the city firsthand, cruising along the ‘Strip’ in a party bus and immersing myself in the 24-hour party scene.
Las Vegas – Grand Canyon
Leaving the glittering lights of Vegas behind, we headed for something even more jaw-dropping, in search of one of the ‘Seven Natural Wonders of the World’ and into Arizona’s high country – the Mighty Grand Canyon. The journey to the Grand Canyon is a mesmerizing experience in itself, as the road winds through the stunning landscapes of Arizona. As we cruised the historic Route 66, we were surrounded by the allure of the American West, with its tales of adventure and exploration.
One of the most memorable stops along the way was at a historical viewpoint in the Southwest, offering a glimpse into the past and the natural beauty of the region. The iconic Route 66 embodies the spirit of the American road trip, with its rustic charm and storied history. It provided us with an ideal setting for capturing timeless photographs and creating lasting memories.

Continuing our journey, we were treated to endless vistas of arid landscapes, each more spectacular than the last. The rugged beauty of the desert held us in awe, punctuated by occasional glimpses of life and civilization in quaint desert towns. The road led us through a tapestry of sights and sounds, evoking the spirit of the American frontier.
Finally, our anticipation peaked as we approached the Grand Canyon National Park. The sheer magnitude of the canyon, carved by the Colorado River over millions of years, left us speechless.
Grand Caynon
Here, I had the opportunity to explore the Grand Canyon, a place I had heard so much about. It was truly awe-inspiring. No journey would be complete without visiting this mighty natural wonder, one of the world’s most recognizable and the pride of Arizona. As soon as I beheld this extraordinary place, I felt compelled to appreciate the marvels of Mother Nature. The sheer grandeur of this natural wonder was astonishing, and experiencing one of the Earth’s natural wonders was profoundly moving. Seeking a deeper connection with nature, I embarked on a lengthy return hike down the Bright Angel trail to Plateau Point. There, I pondered life, existence, and the immense scale of the Grand Canyon. Standing at the edge of this natural wonder, we were humbled by its grandeur and timeless beauty. As the sun painted the canyon walls with vibrant hues, we knew that this was a moment that would stay with us forever.

Perhaps the most breathtaking experience at this natural wonder was taking a helicopter ride over the UNESCO World Heritage site, witnessing the Grand Canyon in all its glory from above. The Grand Canyon is magnificent from any vantage point, but I will always remember my first glimpse of the canyon, whether it was from a walk along the rim or the ultimate bird’s-eye view overhead. This was unquestionably the most spine-tingling experience I have ever had. From sunrise to sunset, the mighty Grand Canyon has left me in awe.

Grand Canyon – Cortez via Monument Valley
With the unforgettable grandeur of the Grand Canyon forever etched in my mind, departing from this majestic natural wonder was undeniably a challenging experience, despite being at the outset of my epic American road trip. I soon found myself back on the road, heading towards yet another of North America’s most iconic landscapes – Monument Valley. En route, we traversed some rugged Wild Western terrain, eventually arriving at this monumental location characterized by its iconic cluster of sandstone buttes. Here, I seized the opportunity to explore the Monument Valley Tribal Park.
Monument Valley
This valley, located in the state of Utah, is part of the Navajo Nation. Monument Valley exuded a profound sense of sacredness, and it left a lasting impression on me. It is undeniably one of the most iconic destinations in the American Southwest, rivaled only by the Grand Canyon, and stands as a quintessential example of the classic American West landscape. Monument Valley’s rugged beauty has served as the backdrop for numerous Western films, including the recent remake of The Lone Ranger. In an effort to engage with the indigenous culture, I embarked on a guided jeep tour of the Navajo Reservation and backroads. The experience was unforgettable, both for myself and for many other travelers. As I gazed in awe at the towering buttes and mesas that dominate the landscape by day, and later gathered around a campfire beneath a blanket of stars, I couldn’t help but feel deeply moved by the experience.

Monument Valley – Cortez
From the dry landscape scenery of Monument Valley to the awe-inspiring landscapes of Cortez in Colorado state, our journey was nothing short of captivating. Crossing through the state of Utah, we were greeted by the magnificent beauty of the natural surroundings, offering a glimpse into the remarkable diversity of the American West. As our adventure led us to Cortez, Colorado, we settled in for an overnight stay at a quaint motel, where the tranquility of the night sky mirrored the peaceful serenity of the surroundings. Our anticipation mounted as we prepared to continue our expedition to Albuquerque, savoring the experiences and memories carefully crafted along the way.
Cortez – Albuquerque via Durango
The following day, we continued our journey to the city of Albuquerque in the state of New Mexico, making a stop in the town of Durango, known as Colorado’s adventure capital, for exciting outdoor activities. Durango, a historically significant mining town, is characterized by rugged terrain and abundant foliage, with the colors of the native trees changing throughout the seasons. To immerse myself in this adventure-filled town, I embarked on an exhilarating jeep ride through the mountains to catch a glimpse of Colorado’s snowy peaks. Navigating rivers, creeks, and rough pathways, we finally reached the summit, where the breathtaking views made the challenging journey worthwhile. Durango is undeniably a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, a place that keeps the spirit of adventure alive.

Albuquerque
From the captivating adventure hub of Colorado – Durango, our journey continued as we headed south to Albuquerque in the state of New Mexico, a land of enchantment. Albuquerque is renowned as the capital and home to the world-famous International Balloon Fiesta. Annually, enthusiasts from around the globe gather to showcase their hot-air balloons of various shapes, colors, and sizes, creating a breathtaking spectacle that fills the sky. To partake in this extraordinary event, I braved the early morning hours, rising before 4am to witness the hot-air balloon extravaganza. The experience of soaring high above Albuquerque left me speechless. The view from above was truly remarkable, presenting a spectacular display of sound and color in the realm of aviation. The most mesmerizing moment was observing the sunrise emerge over the mountains, casting its brilliance upon our awaiting faces. It was a truly glorious and joyous experience to savor.

Albuquerque to Amarillo via Sante Fe
After the exhilarating hot-air balloon flight, we returned to the hotel. By 9am, we resumed our journey to Amarillo, Texas, making a stop in the capital of New Mexico, Santa Fe, which is a two-hour drive from Albuquerque.
Sante Fe
Arriving in Santa Fe, we experienced a profound immersion in culture that transported us to another era. Santa Fe, renowned for its sun-drenched adobe buildings standing out against the azure sky, possesses a distinctive character shaped by Mexican, Spanish, and Native American influences. Santa Fe truly represents a rich amalgamation of cultures. The city is also esteemed for its ancient historic town and stunning mountainous backdrop. Art enthusiasts will find Santa Fe captivating, with its diverse architectural styles and notable landmarks like Canyon Road, home to art galleries and cultural treasures such as hand-woven Navajo rugs and historic adobe buildings, as well as a lively restaurant scene. A personal highlight was the exploration of exceptional food-tasting stalls and markets, where a variety of regional delicacies and spices are available. This was an unparalleled and enriching experience.

Amarillo
After few hours of tasting the spicy and exotic foods, we continued our journey across the state which is larger than some countries – Texas, to funky Amarillo, situated in the Texas Panhandle where we spend the night there. This is where we get to experience the real taste of true Americana style, a place where eternal glory awaits for anyone that can finish a Texas size steak (gigantic Texan steak) in an hour or less. This incredible place is where many folks make their way into this massive restaurant, serving nothing but steaks only.
The atmosphere in Amarillo is infused with the spirit of the Old West, where the history of cattle ranching and the iconic cowboy lifestyle still echo throughout the streets. As the sun sets over the vast Texan landscape, the warm glow of the evening paints the sky in hues of orange and pink, casting a serene ambiance over this charming city.
With an insatiable appetite for adventure, we delved into the heart of Amarillo, discovering hidden gems and local hotspots that embody the essence of Texan hospitality. From savoring mouthwatering barbecue joints to dancing to the twangy tunes of country music, every moment in Amarillo pulsated with vibrant energy and rich cultural significance.
As the night enveloped the city, we found ourselves immersed in the jovial atmosphere of the Amarillo nightlife. The lively chatter of locals mingled with the melodious notes of live music, creating an irresistible allure that beckoned us into the heart of the Texan spirit. We reveled in the warmth of newfound friendships and the captivating allure of Amarillo’s unmistakable charm.
Venturing deep into the heart of the Lone Star State, we immersed ourselves in the authenticity and allure of Amarillo, a city that embodies the true essence of Texas hospitality and adventure.

Amarillo – Dallas
The next day, we departed from Amarillo in the early hours of the morning, just before sunrise, and resumed our journey to Dallas, Texas. Dallas is recognized for its association with Oil Tycoons, affluent ranchers, a burgeoning tech industry, and notably, the Dallas Cowboys, often referred to as “America’s Team.” Dallas has always been a destination I’ve been keen to explore, not only to witness the Dallas Cowboys, but also to visit the site where President Kennedy was tragically assassinated.
The following day, almost in the spirit of an investigation, I ventured to the 6th floor museum to delve deeper into the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, contemplating the ‘whodunnit’ of the event. Walking along the very route that President Kennedy’s motorcade took when he was assassinated in 1963 was an eerie experience. Setting foot in that very place induced an unsettling sensation, sending shivers down my spine. It was a chilling experience that left me distinctly uncomfortable. Experiencing the lingering presence of historical events in the present moment was both exhilarating and haunting.

Before leaving Dallas, I made it a point to visit the Dallas Cowboys stadium and catch a game. The experience was nothing short of extraordinary.

Dallas – Memphis
The following day, we departed from the state of Texas and embarked on a lengthy journey to Memphis in the state of Tennessee, traversing through the states of Kansas and Arkansas. After numerous hours of driving, we eventually traversed the Mississippi River as we neared Memphis, the birthplace of rock ‘n’ roll. Upon arriving at our hotel, we were enveloped by the ambiance of blues, soul, and rock ‘n’ roll music from every direction. Keeping this in mind, we paid a visit to Sun Studio, a venue that has welcomed numerous legendary figures in music since the 1950s. Later that evening, we leisurely roamed up and down Beale Street, where the vibrant atmosphere kept us engrossed for hours as we sought out some of the finest blues music in town.

There was more to Memphis than just music. The following day, we visited the National Civil Rights Museum located in the former Lorraine Hotel and the place where Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated. A visit to Memphis is incomplete without a trip to Graceland, the home of the late king of rock ‘n’ roll – Elvis Presley, who was my childhood idol. I had the opportunity to explore both the exterior and interior of his Graceland home, including his final resting place where the eternal flame still burns. Today, thousands or even millions of fans and visitors make the journey to pay their respects each year. Many visitors come dressed in Elvis Presley costumes and are moved to tears. It’s a remarkable feeling that his presence is still strongly felt today and will never be forgotten.

Memphis – New Orleans
The following day, we bid farewell to the rock ‘n’ roll state and the home of Elvis Presley and welcomed New Orleans in the state of Louisiana, renowned for its gumbo stews and vibrant Jazz scene. This city is a must-visit for every music enthusiast. When people think of New Orleans, the French Quarter immediately comes to mind. This vibrant area offers an endless nightlife, making it an exhilarating and captivating place that you never want to leave due to its 24-hour activity.
I ventured into the captivating French Quarter to immerse myself in its unique lifestyle. The authentic tunes at Preservation Hall filled the air before I indulged in traditional, delectable Southern cuisine. Refraining from the temptation of gumbo and jambalaya was a challenge, yet I succumbed to a nighttime dinner cruise along the Mississippi River on a historic river paddle boat, where the melodies of jazz and blues intertwined. Subsequently, I sought out the infamous nightlife of Bourbon Street, a place where almost anything goes. Here, I savored the live music and bar culture that New Orleans extends to its visitors. With its blend of Caribbean and European culinary influences, coupled with the pervasive and ceaseless jazz melodies, I savored the genuine essence of the New Orleans lifestyle. It exudes an ambiance that is not easily abandoned, and indeed, New Orleans is a place teeming with vitality—an experience that will remain etched in my memory for years to come.

New Orleans – Orlando via Kissemenee
From the lively nightlife of New Orleans’ French Quarter, our journey led us to the west coast, to Orlando in the state of Florida. Orlando, once a modest farming town, has undergone a remarkable transformation, emerging as one of the most frequented destinations in the state. Home to Walt Disney World, it is renowned as the Theme Park Capital of the World. The range of attractions and activities is truly inexhaustible. Whatever the selection, each day was filled with unforgettable experiences. During my visit, I dedicated most of my time to exploring various theme parks, from SeaWorld to Animal Kingdom. The excitement of endless amusement was truly remarkable. However, a visit to Orlando is incomplete without experiencing the Kennedy Space Centre, where I had the opportunity to gain insight into the human pursuit of space exploration.

Orlando – St Augustine
From departing one city to another within Florida, our journey took us north of Orlando along the west coast to the city of St. Augustine, where we stayed for the night. As is often the case during extended travels, especially on the road, late nights, early mornings, and constant movement took a toll on my health. I spent the majority of my time in the hotel room. Thanks to antibiotics, I began to feel much better and was able to take a leisurely stroll along the waterfront in the afternoon.

St Augustine – Savannah
Leaving the state of Florida, I journeyed to Savannah in the state of Georgia. At that point, I was feeling significantly improved, allowing me to fully experience the city of Savannah. Referred to as “The Hostess City of the South,” this city is the oldest in Georgia and boasts a rich and vibrant history that draws millions of visitors annually. Opting for more leisurely pursuits, I devoted my time to exploring the city’s beautiful parks.

Savannah – Raleigh via Charleston
From Savannah in the state of Georgia, we proceeded with our journey further north along the west coast to Raleigh in the state of North Carolina, where we lodged for the night. En route, we made a brief stop in Charleston, South Carolina, before reaching Raleigh.
Raleigh – Washington D.C
We departed from Raleigh in the early hours, before sunrise, and journeyed through the state of Virginia, the District of Maryland, and into Washington DC, the social, cultural, and political hub of the United States of America. This location stands as the very core of the nation’s political world, bustling with museums, monuments, and historical significance. From the esteemed Smithsonian Museums to the solemn Lincoln Memorial, as a connoisseur of culture, I found myself truly immersed in this environment. Exploring Washington DC proved to be an exceptional experience, with an abundance of noteworthy sites and activities to engage in.

Washington D.C – New York City via New Jersey
Leaving the capital behind, we traveled to New York with a stopover in New Jersey and Philadelphia. In Philadelphia, we experienced a cinematic moment with a ascent up the renowned ‘Rocky’ steps, a visit to the Rocky statue, and a tour of Independence Hall and the iconic Liberty Bell, powerful symbols of American independence. Following this, we enjoyed an early lunch with a bite of the famous Philly cheesesteak.
New York and farwell dinner
Upon my arrival in New York, I found myself engulfed by the dazzling city lights often referred to as the Big Apple. The following day, I paid a visit to the Statue of Liberty and explored the city at my own leisurely pace. I also indulged in the diverse culinary scene, relishing handmade pasta in Little Italy, authentic noodles in Chinatown, and traditional American snacks. Immersing myself in the lively neighborhoods, I absorbed the vibrant street atmosphere of Greenwich Village and explored fashionable stores in Soho. Additionally, I sought guidance on the latest shopping destinations and couldn’t resist the allure of the Empire State Building, making it a remarkable experience.
This eventful cross-country road trip led me from Los Angeles to New York, offering a comprehensive view of America. Despite some brief stops that allowed little time for exploration, the journey encompassed iconic landmarks and offered a range of optional activities. The trip was truly unforgettable, granting me valuable insight into this remarkable nation. Embarking on this road adventure transformed life into a journey of profound experiences – though demanding and exhausting at times, the rewards were undeniably worthwhile, making it an exceptional way to discover America.

Resting on my cushy seat on a Qantas flight back to Australia, I couldn’t help but chuckle as I reminisced about my ludicrous road trip from Los Angeles to New York. With a gang of fellow adventurous souls, we conquered 16 states and chalked up enough epic memories to last several lifetimes. The slow road was our only option at times, but hey, it’s where all the quirky stories come from, right? From conquering the mighty Grand Canyon to prancing through the hills of Tennessee, and shimmying across the plains of Texas, we even tried our hand at the tango in New Orleans and dabbled in some casino antics in Las Vegas. Let’s not forget our exploration of the thrilling mega-city of New York. Every American city and state had something bizarre and exuberant to offer. The whole experience was so ridiculously amazing that I still have trouble believing it actually happened. Cruising down the highway, taking in the jaw-dropping views, and waking up in a new spot every few days – now that’s what I call a top-notch source of inspiration!
