My Solo Travel
It came to my attention that I had not considered the matter until the moment was upon me – I was about to depart for Adelaide due to unforeseen circumstances. As I prepared for this journey, the realization struck me that this would be my inaugural solo flight. Although I have traveled by air and land on numerous occasions, venturing forth alone was a new experience. While anticipating the solitude and personal reflection that solo travel often affords, I couldn’t help but wonder how I would navigate this unfamiliar territory. Nevertheless, I resolved to address any challenges as they arose, fully aware that time was of the essence.
Cairns – Adelaide
It has been quite some time since my last visit to Adelaide, a place I hold dear in my memories. As I embarked on this journey, I ensured I arrived at the airport well in advance, adhering to my personal travel ritual. During the flight, a mix of emotions filled my being, eager to reconnect and relive the moments once again. The moment the plane touched down at Adelaide airport, I was greeted with a sharp chill in the air, reminiscent of a winter’s day. It almost felt as if I had stepped into a colder realm, akin to the North Pole.

Upon arriving at the airport, I boarded a public bus bound for Adelaide city’s Rundall Mall. As I navigated through the bustling streets, trying to find way around the bus route, a wave of apprehension washed over me. The busy roads, teeming with traffic, left me feeling a slight sense of unease. Despite relying on my mobile GPS navigation, I found myself continuously choosing the wrong direction, caught in the chaos of the city streets.
O-Bahn Ride
Finally, after embarking on the designated O-Bahn route towards Tea Tree Plaza, my journey carried me through the outskirts of Adelaide. The cityscape of Adelaide gradually disappeared from view as I ventured further into the outskirts. What was initially an adrenaline-fueled experience soon transformed into a sense of exhilaration. Throughout the ride, I relied on the driver’s expertise to navigate the route until reaching my desired stop. A sense of relief washed over me as I stepped off the bus at my destination. A sigh of relief!
In Adelaide, transportation options include buses, trains, and trams, facilitating convenient mobility throughout the city. Notably, Adelaide features the unique O-Bahn Busway, an exclusive network of dedicated concrete tracks that connect the central business district with the northeastern suburbs. This system enables specially designated O-Bahn buses to traverse these designated pathways, offering a seamless transportation experience free from the constraints of regular vehicular traffic.
Adelaide City
In my brief stint, I’ve witnessed how this vibrant city plays host to countless folks from various backgrounds, like a massive cultural potluck. But, oh boy, it’s the stunning sights and scenes that made me swoon! With its enchanting hills, dreamy beaches it made me want to sink my toes in, and wine districts that made me want to raise my glass in delight, Adelaide truly has it all. And let me spill the beans, this city boasts more restaurants per person than you can shake a fork at. It’s like they’re saying, “Hey, we love to eat and we ain’t afraid to show it!” So, if you’re not convinced, I urge you to come on over and experience the city’s magnetic charm for yourself. Trust me, it’ll be worth every food coma-inducing bite!
Victoria Square
The Victoria Square has been meticulously designed to enhance both its aesthetics and functionality, making it the central and most notable square in Adelaide city. Situated in the heart of the city’s one square mile grid, this public square holds great significance. Its name was bestowed by the Street Naming Committee on May 23, 1837, in honor of Princess Victoria, the rightful heir to the British throne.

Botanical Garden
In the very heart of the urban center, yet seemingly secluded from the bustling cityscape, lies Adelaide Botanic Garden. A veritable sanctuary amidst the cosmopolitan hub, it showcases exquisitely crafted gardens, grandeur-lined pathways, and awe-inspiring architectural wonders. Encompassing an expansive 50 hectares, this venerable garden, established in 1857, proudly exhibits some of Australia’s most extraordinary botanical collections.

As a lover of plants and nature, I spend a jolly good hour wandering through the vast expanse of greenery at this one-stop destination. With a whopping 50 hectares of impeccably manicured gardens and impressive architectural marvels, I felt like Alice in Wonderland, only without the shrinking potions. And when I was done exploring, I indulged myself with a cup of tea and scone surrounded by plants. Trust me, the Garden Cafe was the ultimate spot to nourish my soul and tickle my taste buds and let my senses bloom in this oasis of flora and fauna.

The Bicentennial Conservatory, erected in 1989, stands as a remarkable testament to architectural and horticultural expertise. With its impressive stature, it proudly holds the title of the largest single span glasshouse in the Southern Hemisphere. As I step inside this magnificent structure, I found myself captivated by the verdant spectacle of a carefully curated collection of lowland rainforest plants from the thriving ecosystems of northern Australia, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, and the nearby Pacific Islands. It is here that I witness the delicate beauty of species that face the looming threat of endangerment or even extinction in their natural habitats. In general, let us cherish and protect these invaluable treasures for future generations.

Scenic Drive: Windy Point
Windy Point is an exceptional location in Adelaide, perfect for spending a delightful evening while witnessing the captivating sunset. The views it offers over Adelaide are truly breathtaking. If you find yourself pressed for time, like I did, I highly recommend taking a drive during the day. The sight that awaits you will undoubtedly leave you in awe. Positioned approximately 15 minutes away from the CBD along Belair Road, this viewpoint can be effortlessly reached by car, granting you the opportunity to relish the astonishing vista of the city lights from the comfort of your vehicle, without the need for a strenuous hike. Additionally, Windy Point boasts a high-class restaurant where you can indulge in exquisite cuisine, and its large glass windows provide a panoramic spectacle of the illuminated cityscape. It is undoubtedly an establishment that merits a visit on my next trip to Adelaide.

Port Adelaide
In exploring the hidden treasures of Adelaide city, renowned for its exceptional culinary delights and rejuvenating recreational activities, I couldn’t overlook the distinct charming suburb of Port Adelaide. Port Adelaide is a captivating waterfront city that carries a distinctive and briny atmosphere. It holds great importance as the historic maritime heart of South Australia and showcases a remarkable collection of well-preserved historic buildings. One of the iconic building is the light house that stands out once you enter the area.

Its establishment dates back to 1840, and by the 1870s, signs of Port Adelaide’s prosperity were unmistakable. The bustling port has witnessed the graceful presence of majestic sailing ships in the past, followed by steamships, and more recently, modern container and cruise vessels. Even today, the area proudly displays an array of impressive 19th-century buildings. Exploring this area is a delightful journey into the past, allowing one to unravel its captivating historical wonders. The history and charm of this locale have truly captivated me, leaving a lasting impression of its allure. As the locals say, the best way for me to discover this area was to walk the Port. The best treasure trove of South Australia’s heritage were undoubtedly waiting for me in Port Adelaide but first things first, I found myself at the information centre picking the brains of the locals about the area before exploring the area. The sublime beach and an array of exciting activities make it an irresistible magnet for travelers. When it comes to dining options, the choices are abundant, but let me tell you, there’s one place that stands above the rest: Sammys Seafood Restaurant. Indulging in a scrumptious meal at this delightful eatery, renowned as one of Adelaide’s finest seafood establishments, was a truly heavenly experience.

Semaphore
Semaphore, is a charming little neighborhood that could, can be found just 4 kilometers away from bustling Port Adelaide where I temporarily took up residence. It proudly stands as a beacon of joy in the northwestern region of Adelaide, winking at the pristine Gulf St Vincent coastline like an mischievous kid. Picture-perfect, Semaphore sweetly graces the picturesque Lefevre Peninsula, about 14 kilometers away from the fancy-pants city center of Adelaide. So, if you’re in the mood for sea breezes, charming streets, and a touch of whimsy, Semaphore is your go-to place. Just don’t forget to bring your sense of humor.
Semaphore! This little gem of a neighborhood is like a treasure chest tucked away between Union and Hargrave Streets in the north, Hart Street in the south, Gulf St Vincent in the west, and Woolnough Road and Swan Terrace in the east. It’s a place where residential peace meets coastal frenzy, creating the perfect recipe for a wild time. And let me tell you, locals and tourists alike can’t get enough!

The Semaphore jetty, originally measuring 652 m in length, was constructed in 1860 but has since been reduced to 585 m. It offers a scenic view of the Fort Glanville steam train, which serves as a historical artifact under the care of the National Railway Museum. Additionally, situated at the landward end of the jetty, a memorial clock commemorating World War I was erected in 1925.
I gotta say, my time in Adelaide was quite an experience! But let me tell you, the weather played some hilarious tricks on me. The locals themselves were caught off guard by the crazy weather. One moment it was all sunny and fine, and the next I was layering up with jumpers, cardigans, and jackets like there’s no tomorrow. I mean, seriously, Mother Nature couldn’t make up her mind!
So, there I was, on my way to catch my flight to Melbourne, freezing my socks off. I crossed my fingers, hoping for some warmer weather down there. Bright and early, before the crack of dawn at 6 am, I checked out of my hotel room and headed to the bus stop. Lucky for me, I quickly mastered the art of navigating the streets in no time.
Before I knew it, the trusty airport bus pulled up, and I hopped on board, swiping my debit Mastercard like a pro. Can you imagine? It only cost me a measly dollar to get to the airport! I settled into a nice comfy seat, even though it was still early, the streets and the bus were already buzzing with people. Some were off to work, and some were fellow travelers like me, trying to catch our flights.
In a blink of an eye (okay, maybe 15-20 minutes), we arrived at the airport. I hopped off the bus, feeling like a seasoned traveler, and made my way towards the terminal, eager to see what Melbourne had in store for me. Boy, oh boy, what an adventure!
Adelaide – Melbourne
After enduring the never-ending labyrinth of queues for luggage check-ins and security checks, I stumbled upon a magical aroma that led me straight to a heavenly coffee shop. In desperate need of an awakening double-shot, I also grabbed a toasted raisin to fuel my breakfast adventure. Little did I know, this concoction would be my secret weapon to power through the entire day. With a heart filled with hope and caffeine, I bid farewell to the calm haven of Adelaide airport and embarked on a thrilling rollercoaster ride to Melbourne.
As the plane gracefully glided through the skies without a hint of turbulence for a short 1 hour and 20 minutes, I eagerly anticipated the much-anticipated change in weather. Finally, our wheels touched down at Melbourne’s International/Domestic airport. But wait, there was a catch! Since I opted for the economical delights of Jetstar, we had to undertake a mini marathon of nearly a kilometer just to escape the clutches of the terminal. Oh, the things we do for cheap flights! With determination in my steps, I triumphantly marched out of the airport terminal, ascending the escalator to the realm of drop-offs and pick-ups. And there it was, my trusty chariot in the form of a taxi, waiting to escort me to my temporary sanctuary – the hotel. Ah, the adventures of a weary traveler, eternally seeking comfort and humor in the most unexpected places.
Oh boy! So here I was, all settled in my hotel, ready to chill out in Melbourne. But guess what? It seemed like the chilly climate from Adelaide decided to hitch a ride with me! Talk about bad luck! And let me tell you, Melbourne weather wasn’t any better than Adelaide’s. I swear, I had to pile on more jumpers than I even knew existed!
I mean, who needs this kind of challenge? Fighting the weather all day long was becoming my new full-time job! But hey, since I didn’t have any specific places to visit (because I’ve seen it all over the years!), I thought, why not explore some expensive shops? You know, those ones that we don’t have in Far North Queensland. Gotta take advantage of something unique, right?
So there I was, braving the cold, grumbling about the weather, and determined to conquer those expensive shops. Because, hey, if I couldn’t beat the weather, at least I could shop ’til I dropped!
The next day, I found myself trapped in a vortex of consumerism at David Jones, the holy grail of expensive clothes and men’s accessories. It was like stepping into a parallel universe of shopping mayhem. This place was so gigantic that I needed a GPS just to navigate through the endless racks of designer clothes. After what felt like a lifetime, I finally managed to escape and locate my car, feeling like a victorious explorer returning from a treacherous expedition. Back at the hotel, I transformed into a bed-dwelling creature, cocooned in the warm embrace of an electric blanket set to maximum coziness.

As nightfall approached, I braved the outside world once again and ventured into a local club for dinner. Armed with a glass of fancy mojito mocktail, I ordered a plate of spaghetti bolognese, a beloved classic I hadn’t indulged in for eons. Each bite was a symphony of flavors, reawakening memories of pasta perfection. Naturally, the following day I couldn’t resist the gravitational pull of that heavenly club, returning for another rendezvous with my newfound gastronomic soulmate. Surprisingly predictable, I ordered the exact same dish, savoring its delicious familiarity. Who needs variety when you’ve found your pasta soulmate, right?

Melbourne city
After meandering through the streets of Melbourne, soaking in the sights of diverse cultures and lifestyles, let me tell you, I was gobsmacked! The place was alive and kicking, like a kangaroo on a Vegemite high, whereas my hometown of Far North Queensland was as quiet as a koala taking a nap. It was like being caught in a comedy skit, trying to keep up with the bustling city vibes while reminiscing about the serene regional life. It’s a classic case of “city slicker” meets “country bumpkin,” and let me tell you, the contrast couldn’t have been funnier!
Yes, Melbourne is like a boss city in Australia, with a cool mix of yummy food, epic sports events, and badass art vibes. It’s got something for everyone, so you’re guaranteed a rad time when you visit. When the sun goes down, Melbourne comes alive and shows you a night you won’t soon forget. Explore its secret hideaways, trendy hotspots, and foodie heaven, and let Melbourne tease your taste buds with its mind-blowing culinary creations. Brace yourself for an epic adventure! This is why I love Melbourne, every time when I visit the area.
Melbourne – Sydney
After days of indulging in the finest dining, shopping sprees, and some serious wining in Melbourne, it was time for me to hit the road and head to my next destination, Sydney. Flying from Melbourne to Sydney was a breeze, especially since I decided to treat myself and upgrade to fly with Qantas. Who cares if it was only a 57-minute flight, I wanted to fly in comfort and forget about any pesky weight limitations for my carry-on luggage.
Boarding the Qantas flight was a piece of cake, no delays whatsoever. Once we were up in the air, the flight attendants promptly served us piping hot morning snacks and kept the drinks flowing. Train Travel: Sydney – Newcastle/Maitland

Let me tell you, it was like stepping into a whole new world of convenience and cost-effectiveness. Forget the hassle of other modes of transportation, because this train journey had it all!
The train starts its grand journey in Sydney Central Station, winding its way through charming country towns and picturesque coastal gems, all the way to the vibrant Brisbane city. It’s like a rollercoaster ride, but without the loop-de-loops!
After having an absolute blast in Sydney, I decided to bid farewell to the dazzling cityscape and hop back on the train at Central Station. It was a sunny afternoon, around 2:00 pm, when I embarked on my northern adventure. As we chugged away from the city, watching the skyscrapers shrink in the distance, I couldn’t help but feel a tad bit mischievous for opting to travel in the economy class. Well, let’s just say it wasn’t my finest moment, but hey, who doesn’t like a little adventure?
Now, let me tell you about my fellow travelers. It seemed like the economy class was a grand gathering of people from all walks of life, especially those blessed with the government-funded discount tickets. I happened to be seated next to a gentleman heading to Brisbane, and guess what, he was only paying a little under $100 for the pleasure. Apparently, this wasn’t his first rodeo; he’s been on this train over 55 times! That’s some serious train love right there.

And you know what’s truly fascinating about train journeys? You get to meet the most interesting characters. From the whimsical to the wonderful, the train was a melting pot of personalities. I could hardly contain my excitement. So, there I was, on this train adventure, mingling with fellow adventurers from all corners of life. Truly an experience that is an unforgettable train adventure, I won’t be forgetting anytime soon! It’s not just a journey, it’s a ride of a lifetime!
Maitland
Finally, upon reaching Maitland before 6:00 pm, I gracefully dismebarked the mighty long-distance train, going all the way up to Brisbane. With confidence, I proceeded to the bus stop and boarded a public bus to reach my friend’s property. Since I had a good understanding of navigating Maitland, I did not require the assistance of GPS to guide me. I felt at ease and comfortable the moment I stepped inside the house, where I quickly made myself at home. After settling in, it was time to indulge in a celebration fit for royalty, with a platter of cheese, crackers, and a fine bottle of red wine from the renowned Hunter Valley wine region took the centre stage. Oh, the wine flowed like a majestic river as laughter filled the air and tales of adventure were shared.
Maitland is comprised of two distinct townships, each with its own distinct character. The first is Central Maitland, boasting a magnificent High Street and a delightful mall known as The Levee. The second is East Maitland, which offers its own unique charm. Both townships are steeped in history and possess a plethora of remarkable buildings. Visitors who wish to fully appreciate the grace and heritage of these towns should allocate ample time for exploration.

Maitland has long held the status of being the primary town in the Hunter Valley, despite occasional disputes from Newcastle. Consequently, it boasts a multitude of historic structures, a local brickworks, light industry, as well as a thriving tourism sector. The presence of an open-cut mine further adds to its significance. Many residents find employment in the surrounding mines, both to the north in the Hunter Valley and to the south in the Newcastle area.
The Levee is an area that encompasses an array of experiences. Adjacent to the Hunter River and encompassed by Ken Tubman Drive, The Levee is abuzz with liveliness, offering a diverse range of entertainment and dining options. It showcases a fusion of local businesses and national retail stores alongside essential services like banks, solicitors, and accountants. Serving as a captivating extension of the city, The Levee seamlessly connects the urban landscape with the peaceful river, making it an ideal route for a leisurely stroll. It provides an opportunity to appreciate the historic architectural gems that adorn the city’s vibrant High Street, before curving back along the riverbank.

The township of Maitland can be conveniently reached by public bus or on foot if you are physically capable and eager. Throughout the following two days, I heavily relied on the public bus as my main means of transportation. Each morning, I would board the bus and dedicate the majority of my time exploring familiar areas as well as newly constructed shopping centers, before returning to the comfort of my accommodation.
Maitland – Brisbane
After a series of social engagements in the renowned wine region of New South Wales, I embarked on my solo journey to Brisbane. Rising before 5 am, I was able to enjoy a well-deserved breakfast before making my way to Williamtown, home to the Newcastle airport. The airport security checks were swift and efficient, allowing me to settle comfortably in the newly renovated departure lounge, where I took advantage of the opportunity to recharge my electronic devices before embarking on the flight to Brisbane. The weather was splendid, with not a hint of a storm in sight, allowing for a picturesque aerial view of every towns below along the way.
After an hour of uninterrupted flight, we experienced a seamless landing at Brisbane domestic airport just before 9 am. I disembarked and proceeded to the terminal exit, where I boarded a waiting bus that transported us to Brisbane Roma Station. On this particular occasion, the usual train service from the airport to the Brisbane city was temporarily unavailable. The bus ride to the city center was brief, and we were dropped off right at the heart of the city. From there, I made my way to the hotel, which was located a kilometre away from Roma Train Station. Since I arrived two hours ahead of the regular check-in time, the reception staff kindly offered to store my luggage while I ventured out to explore the surrounding area and find something to eat.
The Ibis hotel on Elizabeth Street, where I stayed was conveniently situated in the heart of the city, just behind the Brisbane Mall. This location allowed me to have easy access to a wide range of amenities within a 100-meter radius, including restaurants, shops, and even a casino for those interested in gambling. After midday, I returned to the hotel to check if my assigned room was available. The receptionist, a delightful lady, who had been incredibly helpful during my hotel reservation, kindly offered me a complimentary upgrade to a top-level floor room with a majestic view of the Brisbane River. Without hesitation, I made my way to the elevator and ascended to the highest level where I placed my travel case in one corner and my camera backpack in another. After a refreshing shower, I quickly found myself sinking into the comfort of the bed, succumbing to deep sleep. I was completely exhausted and in need of rest.

Having already explored many of Brisbane’s prominent attractions and accumulated years of knowledge on what to see and do in this city, my current trip has come down to a singular objective – relaxation. I mean, seriously, after all the adventures I’ve had, it is essential for me to unwind before the grand finale of my epic journey back home. But hey, I wouldn’t dream of leaving the city without paying a visit to a few of my beloved specialty shops. You know, because who can resist the allure of big city shopping? It’s like a magnet for my wallet!

Brisbane – Cairns
During my pleasant stay in this charming state, known for its beautiful weather, I had the opportunity to relax and unwind. The saying “beautiful one day, perfect the next” truly did justice to the place. I felt completely rejuvenated and prepared to return home. On my final Qantas flight back, scheduled for 7 pm, I was fortunate enough to check out of the hotel by 11 am. By that time, I had worked up an appetite and decided to have lunch in Chinatown after disembarking the train in Fortitude Valley. I was specifically craving authentic Chinese Yum Cha. Around 3 pm, I took the airport train service from the Valley to reach the airport. Once I disembarked the train, I quickly proceeded through the Qantas entry security check and made my way to the departure lounge.
An hour of waiting at the airport before boarding the flight may feel like an eternity, but it provided me with ample time to refresh and relax without any sense of urgency. Finally, I boarded the flight and embarked on my journey back home to Cairns. Upon my arrival in Cairns, just after 10pm, I made my way to the taxi stand. At that late hour, there were only a few individuals waiting, as most people were gathered around the baggage claim area. A line of taxis awaited, and I entered the first one in the queue. Soon, I found myself en route to the comforting embrace of my own bed. In a mere 10-15 minutes, the taxi arrived outside my apartment. Without delay, I found myself within the welcoming walls of my home, finally back where I belong.
