In taking a drive along this scenic coast from Cairns to Port Douglas offers an unforgettable experience, with breathtaking views and unique attractions along the way. One of the best things about this drive is the stunning coastal landscapes encountered. The azure skies and the fresh sea breeze add an extra charm to the drive, making it a truly mesmerising experience.

The drive along this inland range offers a breathtaking scenery experience. coastal route

I began my coast to inland journey north from Cairns before 7:30am, eager to beat the morning rush. Not only I was treated to unparalleled natural beauty, but there also numerous attractions and charming stops that highlight the region’s rich history and culture. From the renowned Palm Cove with its beautiful palm-fringed beach to the intriguingly named Rex Lookout, each stop offered unique perspective and a chance to create lasting memories. Additionally, I had the opportunity to visit the stunning beaches, such as Ellis Beach and Wangetti Beach, and took a refreshing dip at Ellis beach added an exciting element to my drive.

Palm Cove beach

My first stop on the day road trip took me to Palm Cove beach, situated 20 kilometres north of Cairns. This stunning beach is known for its clear blue waters, soft golden sands, and coconut palm trees lining the shore. It’s is a perfect place to relax, soak up the sun, and enjoy the natural beauty of Far North Queensland. Visitors can take a leisurely stroll along the palm-fringed esplanade, swim in the ocean, or simply unwind with a good book. Palm Cove Beach offers a tranquil and picturesque setting for your tropical escape.

Ellis beach

Just a short distance away from the pristine Palm Cove, Ellis Beach offers a more secluded and tranquil setting for beach lovers. With its long stretches of white sand and picturesque views of the Coral Sea, it’s a perfect escape for those seeking relaxation and natural beauty. The gentle lapping of the waves and the refreshing sea breeze create an idyllic atmosphere, inviting visitors to unwind and soak in the tropical splendor. Whether it’s a leisurely stroll along the water’s edge or simply lazing under the sun, Ellis Beach provides a serene coastal experience not far from the bustling energy of Palm Cove.

Rex Lookout

After driving for 20-30 minutes, I arrived at Rex Lookout, a cliffside beside the road offering stunning views of the reef, coastline, and mountain ranges. This popular stop attracts tourists and travelers on this scenic route, providing a perfect vantage point for capturing captivating landscapes. It’s a great spot to unwind while taking in the majestic mountain, ocean, coastline, and cool sea breeze. As we marveled at the view, thrill-seekers soared above us, leaping from the cliff with their hang-gliders.

Port Douglas town

I continued my drive for another 30 minutes from Rex Lookout, before arriving at the seaside resort town of Port Douglas, the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef. In this tranquil coastal town, I enjoyed a peaceful morning breakfast before making my way to the Port Douglas lookout. The panoramic view from the lookout was truly mesmerizing and lived up to my expectations.

The Inland route

Leaving the coast behind, I began my inland adventure up Rex Range. As I venture deeper into the heart of the region, I encountered a notable transition from coastal views to the verdant tropical rainforest and then to savannah vistas. The refreshing highland air in Julatten, enveloped by verdant trees and the vitality of the rainforest, offered a mesmerizing experience, particularly for nature enthusiasts and bird-watchers. Additionally, the scenic Mt Molloy Tableland, renowned for its mild climate at just over 400 meters in elevation, stood out as another highlight along the route, providing picturesque scenery and a tranquil ambiance.

Julatten town

The drive up the Rex Range to Jullatten can be perilous during the winter and rainy seasons, presenting significant dangers to travelers. However, on this particular day, the sky was clear and devoid of stormy clouds. Situated on the Julatten and Mt Molloy Tableland, this region is renowned for its captivating scenery. As I began my ascent up the range, I was met with the refreshing chill of the high-altitude air in Julatten, surrounded by lush green foliage and the vibrant energy of the rainforest. Tucked away in the rainforest, this charming locale is a sanctuary for wildlife enthusiasts, particularly birdwatchers, attracting thousands of visitors annually.

Mt Molloy town

Without pausing at Julatten, I continued along the picturesque route to Mt Molloy. This delightful town, with a population of around 300 residents, offers a unique and captivating experience. Despite its modest amenities, such as a single pub, bakery, small general store, petrol station, cafe, and a couple of boutique shops, the town’s allure is steadily growing. I made a brief stop at the pub and explored a couple of shops before resuming my road trip.

Mareeba town

Next on my journey was a 30-minute drive across the savannah land from Mt Molloy on the Mulligan Highway, leading to the town of Mareeba. This town is renowned for its rich multicultural heritage and diverse wildlife, as well as a flourishing coffee and wine culture, complemented by an average of 300 days of clear blue skies each year. Mareeba has a fascinating history dating back to the era of gold mining and was once a prominent tobacco-growing region before diversifying into agricultural pursuits such as sugarcane, bananas, coffee, and wine. Here, I visited a couple of shops before settling for a local coffee at Coffee-works with homemade cheesecake. This area holds a strong appeal for independent travelers who seek the freedom of self-guided exploration.

While in Mareeba, I had the option of driving back to Cairns via Kuranda Range or continue driving further around the Atherton Tablelands to the township of Atherton and Yungaburra before heading down the Gillies Range. The latter sounds more exciting and fun way to see the vast area.

Atherton town

In continuing my day trip drive, I departed Mareeba after savoring a delightful coffee at Coffee-Works, locally sourced. I then enjoyed a leisurely drive to Atherton town, passing through savannah land, banana, and avocado farmlands. As I beheld the picturesque sights, I couldn’t help but be in awe of the serene beauty of the countryside. It was truly a gratifying journey, enriched by the lush abundance of nature. The tranquility of the surroundings offered a calming backdrop to my drive, allowing me to deeply appreciate the simple pleasures of the open road and the beauty of the land.

Atherton township offers very little activities and attractions for visitors to enjoy, except wander along the town’s Main Street to find something eat. My favourite spot is the Hallorans Hill Lookout. The panoramic vistas from the top of the hill are breathtaking, providing a perfect vantage point for taking in the surrounding areas. Great spot to capturing the perfect photograph as well as simply taking a moment to appreciate the natural splendor

Yungaburra town

The town of Yungaburra is a charming gem nestled in the Atherton Tablelands offers picturesque landscape, rich history, and vibrant community. It offers a unique blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage. Yungaburra is renowned for its historic buildings dating back to the late 1800s, which provide a glimpse into the town’s past. Visitors can wander through the streets and admire the beautifully preserved architecture, including the iconic Yungaburra Hotel and the majestic Curtain Figtree stands as a testament to the area’s natural wonders. Here I settle for lunch at one of my favourite local cafe right int he heart of the township.

Before departing Yungaburra, taking a brief 5-minute drive to Tinaburra offers a view of Lake Tinaroo. The journey then proceeds towards Gillies Range. Just a short distance from Yungaburra lies the pristine Lake Barrine, nestled among the lush tropical rainforest. Here, I was able to relish the serene environment and the captivating surroundings. After immersing myself in this natural beauty, my journey continued, descending the 19-kilometer winding road of Gillies Range before returning to Cairns.

The drive down Gillies Range offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, with the road winding its way through the verdant mountains. As I navigate through the twists and turns, I can’t help but be in awe of the lush greenery and the sense of serenity that permeates the air. The journey becomes an adventure in itself, as each bend in the road reveals a new perspective of the natural wonder that is the tropical rainforest.

Concluding the scenic circuit day trip from the coastal drive north of Cairns, I proceeded inland west of Port Douglas and then continued down to the coast from Lake Barrine back to Cairns. The journey proved to be an enjoyable excursion with a wealth of sights to behold.
