The aftermath of cyclone Jasper rendered the road connecting Cairns to Port Douglas inaccessible, but after restoration, it’s now accessible and inviting.


As I lay in bed awake in the early hours of the morning after a restless night, I was contemplating what to do for the rest of the day. Initially, I planned to relax at home and watch movies, but as the sun began to illuminate the landscape, I was compelled to take advantage of the beautiful day and decided to take a scenic trip somewhere – Port Douglas came to mind. I was curious to see the aftermath of cyclone Jasper. Prior to the cyclone, this road trip from Cairns to Port Douglas and further north is widely regarded as one of the most scenic routes in Far North Queensland. Thousands of travelers embark on this picturesque journey every year, immersing themselves in the breathtaking natural beauty of the region.

After enduring the devastating impact of cyclone Jasper, the road connecting Cairns to the picturesque seaside town of Port Douglas remained inaccessible for an extensive period. The aftermath of cyclone Jasper resulted in extensive damage to the scenic road, depriving Port Douglas of tourist activity for an extended duration. Following relentless efforts from repair crews working tirelessly to restore the ravaged road, it has finally been cleared, restored, and reopened for public access. Both local residents from the far north and travelers alike can once again traverse this scenic route.

Without hesitation, I decided to take a road trip to Port Douglas, Mossman Gorge, and Daintree. The lush greenery and captivating beauty of the region filled my senses, providing a soothing escape from the bustling city life. As I journeyed through the winding roads, the vibrant foliage and the sounds of local wildlife surrounded me, creating a truly enchanting experience. The drive to Port Douglas was not just a physical journey, but also a spiritual one, as I connected with the natural wonders that this region has to offer. The reopening of this road marks a new chapter of exploration and rejuvenation for both locals and tourists alike.

The experience of visiting a tourist town after a devastating flood was truly eye-opening for me. Coming back to the area with the intention of contributing to the local economy and showing support felt like a meaningful way to make a difference. It’s important to convey the message that it’s okay to return to this tropical region and revel in its natural beauty.
