Sometimes, you just need to get away — away from the city, the noise, the rush of everyday life. My recent camping trip to Fong-On Bay Campground at Lake Tinaroo, in the beautiful Atherton Tablelands, was exactly that. It was a refreshing escape where time seemed to slow down, and nature became the only company I needed.
Whether you’re into glamping or camping, Lake Tinaroo has the facilities to make all visitors feel welcome. The beauty of Lake Tinaroo is that it caters to a wide range of preferences, making it an ideal destination for nature enthusiasts and outdoor adventurers alike. From the tranquil atmosphere of the lakeshore to the rugged charm of the surrounding wilderness, there’s something for everyone to appreciate. Whether you prefer the convenience of modern amenities or the simplicity of traditional camping, Lake Tinaroo provides the perfect setting to create lasting memories in the great outdoors.
🌴Why Go Camping at Fong-On Bay
If I’m looking for a place that combines tranquillity, scenery, and a touch of adventure, Lake Tinaroo always ticks every box for me. Fong-On Bay, in particular, is one of my favourite spots — with its wide-open spaces, peaceful lakeside access, and calm atmosphere. It’s the perfect place to unwind, whether I’m camping solo for some quiet reflection or sharing a relaxed weekend getaway with family and friends.
The calm waters of the lake make it a perfect spot for swimming, kayaking, fishing, or simply sitting by the shore watching the sun rise and set over the water. The nights are especially magical here, with the sky transforming into a blanket of stars that seem close enough to touch.
🚗Getting There
Leaving Cairns early in the morning, I took the scenic Gillies Range Road, winding through lush rainforest and misty mountains before reaching Yungaburra. From there, it was a short drive to Lake Tinaroo, and before long, I found myself turning off onto the gravel road that led to Fong-On Bay Campground bypassing Tinaroo Dam.
The moment I arrived, I knew I’d made the right choice. The air was crisp, the lake shimmered under the morning sun, and birds were already calling from the nearby gum trees. I picked a spot right by the water — close enough to hear the gentle ripples against the shore.
🏕️Setting Up Camp
There’s something deeply satisfying about setting up camp in a place like this. The open grass area was perfect for pitching my tent, and the surroundings were peaceful — just the sound of the wind rustling through the trees.
Once everything was in place, I gathered firewood and got the campfire going. There’s nothing quite like that first spark catching, the smell of smoke drifting through the air, and the warmth of the flames as the sun starts to dip. It’s a feeling of complete contentment — that you’ve escaped, if only for a little while.

🚣Moments by the Lake
Lake Tinaroo has a calming energy. The stillness of the water, the calls of birds, and the occasional splash of fish breaking the surface make it feel like time doesn’t matter here.
As evening fell, I sat by the fire with a hot drink, watching the sky turn from gold to deep purple. The stars slowly began to appear — bright and endless. The fire crackled, the night air grew cool, and all I could hear was nature’s quiet rhythm. It was peaceful, grounding, and exactly what I came for.

🦅Morning Calm and Wildlife
The next morning, I woke to a soft mist rolling over the lake. Kookaburras laughed in the distance, and I could see wallabies grazing near the tree line. It felt like the world was slowly waking up around me.
After breakfast, I wandered along the lake’s edge with my camera, capturing the reflections of trees on the calm water. I even spotted a few bush turkeys scratching through the leaves and flocks of birds flying overhead. The stillness of the morning was almost meditative — the kind of moment you wish you could bottle up and take home.
The campground was teeming with wildlife, and Fong-On Bay certainly showcases the true inhabitants of the lake. It was a deeply enriching experience as I indulged in my passion for photography, striving to capture the creatures that call this expansive lake home. Each moment was precious, and I found the entire experience to be truly exceptional. Being surrounded by wildlife throughout both the day and night was a uniquely remarkable and unforgettable experience, one that I had longed for over the years.

🧳Packing Up and Heading Home
As the 2-night came to an end, I slowly began packing up and getting ready to head home. There was that familiar mix of contentment and reluctance — the feeling you get when you know it’s time to leave, but a part of you wishes you could stay just a little longer. I folded up my tent, cleaned the campsite, and took one last look at the still waters of Lake Tinaroo, glistening under the morning sun.
The fire had burned down to soft ashes, the birds were singing, and the air was calm — it felt like nature’s gentle farewell. Driving away from Fong-On Bay, I carried with me that deep sense of peace that only comes from time spent outdoors. Sometimes, the best part of these trips isn’t just the escape itself, but how refreshed and grounded you feel when you return home.
💧Why I Loved Fong-On Bay
What makes Fong-On Bay so special is its simplicity. There are no loud crowds, especially during the week-days, no artificial lights, and no distractions. It’s just you, the lake, and the natural world around you.
It’s a place where you can truly unplug, light a fire, cook your own meals, and enjoy the company of the stars. Whether you’re camping solo, with friends, or family, there’s something magical about waking up by the water and falling asleep to the sounds of nature.

⏲️Best Time to Visit
The dry season (April to October) is the best time to camp at Lake Tinaroo. Days are pleasantly warm, nights are cool, and the skies are clear for stargazing. During the wet season, the area can get muddy, but it still has a quiet, moody charm if you don’t mind the occasional shower.
A Week-Day Well Spent
My two-night camping at Fong-On Bay was exactly what I needed — no schedules, no phone signal, no noise. Just peace. Sitting by the fire at night, with the lake glimmering under the moonlight, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for this corner of North Queensland that still feels untouched.
If you ever need to slow down, breathe fresh mountain air, and reset your mind, Fong-On Bay Campground at Lake Tinaroo is the place to go. It’s not just camping — it’s a reminder of what simplicity feels like.
