Cairns might be known for its tropical climate and the Great Barrier Reef, but each October, the city transforms into a slice of Bavaria — all thanks to the German Club Cairns.
I recently joined the crowd to celebrate Oktoberfest, and what an unforgettable experience it was! From the moment I stepped into the grounds of the German-Austrian-Swiss Association FNQ, the energy was electric. Laughter filled the air, traditional German tunes echoed from the bandstand, and the smell of sizzling bratwurst drifted through the crowd. It was hard not to feel swept up in the excitement.
A Brief History of the German Club Cairns
The German Club Cairns began in 1971, when a small group of German-speaking migrants came together to celebrate their heritage, culture and traditions in Far North Queensland.
Originally called the Cairns Germania Club, it quickly grew into a vibrant community hub for friendship, food, and culture. By the early 1980s, the club purchased its permanent home on Winkworth Street in Bungalow, transforming an old church into a welcoming clubhouse. As membership expanded, it evolved into the German-Austrian-Swiss Association FNQ, reflecting its inclusive spirit.
Today, over five decades later, the German Club continues to thrive — hosting cultural events, language gatherings, and the region’s biggest Oktoberfest north of Brisbane. What began as a small gathering has blossomed into a beloved Cairns tradition celebrating unity, music, heritage, and good cheer. 🍻
A Tradition That Keeps Growing
Oktoberfest has deep roots dating back to 1810 in Munich, Germany, when locals gathered to celebrate the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig. What began as a royal wedding party turned into an annual festival — a celebration of good food, beer, and community spirit.
Here in Cairns, that same tradition continues to blossom under the tropical sun. The German Club has been at the heart of cultural life in Far North Queensland for decades, preserving the customs and flavours of Central Europe. Their Oktoberfest is now one of the most anticipated cultural events in the city — proudly calling itself the “Biggest Oktoberfest north of Brisbane.”
A Day of Bavarian Fun
The celebration stretched across two weekends, drawing locals and tourists alike. By midday, the venue was buzzing with people dressed in Lederhosen and Dirndl, raising their steins and cheering “Prost!” to the beat of Bavarian music.
The German Club kitchen was in full swing, serving up traditional dishes — from crispy pork knuckle and bratwurst with sauerkraut to freshly baked pretzels. Each bite tasted like a little piece of Germany, and nothing paired better than a chilled imported German beer.
Entertainment filled every corner — oompah bands, Bavarian dancing, and even a few family games that brought smiles to every age. Kids painted their faces in blue and white while adults joined in the laughter and competitions, keeping the festival spirit alive all day long.

It was heartwarming to see people of all ages — families, travellers, and long-time locals — coming together to share in the same joyful tradition. The German Club truly deserves credit for keeping this festive tradition alive in the north, blending authenticity with tropical hospitality.
Final Thoughts
