Albuquerque, New Mexico, welcomed me with its vibrant culture, stunning landscapes, and the unforgettable experience of floating among the clouds during the world-famous Hot Air Balloon Fiesta. This trip was nothing short of magical, blending adventure, tradition, and the sheer beauty of nature.
The Enchanting City of Albuquerque
Nestled in the high desert, Albuquerque boasts a charm that’s both rustic and vibrant. Its adobe-style architecture, local artisan markets, and the rich history of Old Town make it a city worth exploring. But the highlight of my trip was undoubtedly its connection to the skies. Albuquerque’s clear, crisp October mornings provided the perfect backdrop for my aerial adventure.
The Hot Air Balloon Ride
As the morning sun kissed the horizon, I found myself at the launch site, heart racing with excitement. Watching the balloon inflate was mesmerising-the fabric transformed into a vibrant, towering giant ready to take flight.
Finally, the moment arrived for me to hop into this basket. We all scrambled for space as I found myself nestled in a cozy wicker basket with 6 other adventurers from across the globe. It was like squeezing into an elevator during rush hour, but with a much better view!

As we ascended, the view was breathtaking. My brain and thoughts were bombarded with words like, ‘magical’, ‘surreal’, ‘amazing’, ‘incredible’ and ‘wow’. It was absolutely mind-blowing to witness the world from such a lofty vantage point. Below, the Rio Grande wove through the landscape, and the Sandia Mountains stood majestically to the east. The silence of the sky was punctuated only by the occasional roar of the burner. Floating serenely, I felt a deep connection to the natural beauty around me. It was a perspective of the world unlike any other-tranquil, boundless, and utterly unforgettable.

The breathtaking landscape below us, the gentle sway of the balloon, and the peaceful silence of the skies combined to create a remarkable spectacle. As we soared high above the earth, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of being on top of the world, as if all the worries and concerns of everyday life were left far below. It was truly an unforgettable experience that left me with a renewed appreciation for the beauty of the world around us.
The Hot Air Balloon Fiesta
The timing of my trip aligned perfectly with the annual Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, a spectacular like no other. This event draws thousands of visitors from around the world, and for good reason. Imagine hundreds of hot air balloons each uniquely designed, taking to the skies in a synchronized dance.
The fiesta’s signature event, the Mass Ascension, left me awestruck. Balloons of all shapes, sizes, and colours floated together, creating a kaleidoscope against the crisp blue sky. From classic designs to whimsical shapes like animals and spacecraft, each balloon told a story.
As the dusk fell, the Balloon Glow brought the fiesta to life in a while new way. The balloons, tethered to the ground, illuminated like giant lanterns, casting a warm, magical glow across the festival grounds. Trust me, it’s one of those “you have to see it to believe it” kind of experiences!
It was a photographer’s dream and an experience I’ll forever treasure.
Beyond the Fiesta
Albuquerque has so much more to offer. During my recent visit, I eagerly explored the Petroglyph National Monument, where ancient carvings told vivid stories of the region’s early inhabitants, showcasing their culture and beliefs etched in stone for centuries. As I hiked along the trails, I marveled at the artwork that adorned the rocks, each petroglyph capturing a moment in time that connected me to the distant past. The Sandia Peak Tramway provided breathtaking, sweeping views of the city and the surrounding desert landscape, a perfect way to end a day of exploration, as the setting sun cast a warm golden glow over the mountains and valleys below, making the experience truly unforgettable and leaving me in awe of the natural beauty that Albuquerque possesses.
Reflection from the Sky
My trip to Albuquerque was a testament to the wonder of travel and the thrill of adventure. The Hot Air Balloon Fiesta and my serene ride above the desert painted memories that will forever stay with me. Albuquerque isn’t just a destination-it’s an experience, one that captures your heart.
