Explore beyond London to discover English quaint villages, historic attractions, and serene countryside. From the bustling city to majestic Windsor Castle, charming Bath, and coastal gems, immerse in diverse English experiences.

Leaving the hustle and bustle of London, I embarked on a journey to explore the heart of England. My itinerary included some of the most picturesque and historic towns: Windsor, Reading, Basingstoke, Salisbury, and Bath. Each destination offered its own unique blend of charm, history, and culture, making the trip unforgettable.

Windsor: A Royal Welcome

Highlights: Windsor Castle, River Cruise, St. George’s Chapel and Markets

After basking in the glitzy London high life for a few days, it was time for me to escape the gravitational pull of London’s hustle and bustle. Maneuvering through the chaotic London traffic felt like a wild adventure for a young lad used to the tranquil streets of a tiny town like Cairns, Australia. Every turn I took seemed like a scene from a comedy of errors. Somehow, I managed to navigate my way out of the mayhem and headed straight to my first stop – the majestic Windsor, home to the iconic Windsor Castle. It was definitely a journey to remember!

As one of the official residences of the British Royal Family, the castle exudes grandeur and history. Walking through the cobbled streets of Windsor felt like stepping back in time, with quaint shops and traditional pubs lining the way. A visit to St. George’s Chapel, the site of many royal ceremonies, added a spiritual and historical touch to the experience.

Stepping into the regal grounds of the castle, I was transported to a bygone era of opulence and nobility. The sprawling grounds and impressive architecture offered a glimpse into the rich heritage of the British monarchy. Exploring the lavish chambers and strolling through the meticulously-manicured gardens, I couldn’t help but marvel at the grandeur and historical significance of this architectural masterpiece.

A stroll along the River Thames provided a peaceful contrast to the real atmosphere, and I couldn’t resist a boat ride to soak in the scenic views of Windsor and Eton.

Windsor Castle Tour

Reading: A Blend of Tradition and Modernity

Highlights: Abbey Ruins, Museum of English Rural Life, Jane Austen’s House Museum and Forbury Gardens

Next, I traveled to Reading, a town that beautifully balances its historical heritage with a modern vibe. The joyride from Windsor to Reading felt like a breeze, taking only about 30 minutes via the M4 motorway, covering a distance of around 20 miles. This route not only offers beautiful views of the English countryside, but also gives you a chance to do some top-notch rubbernecking as it twists and turns through some seriously Instagram-worthy landscapes and cute little towns. As I bid adieu to the grandeur of Windsor, the leisurely trip to Reading allowed me to soak in the delightful surroundings and get pumped up for all the shenanigans waiting for me in this historic town. From the captivating charm of Windsor Castle to the exciting adventures awaiting in Reading, the drive was basically like the opening act to a seriously awesome show!

Reading also surprised me with its vibrant art scene and bustling Oracle shopping center, offering plenty of dining and entertainment options. A quiet walk along the Kennet and Avon Canal was the perfect way to unwind before continuing my journey.

Basingstoke: Hidden Gems Await

Highlights: The Vyne, Milestone Museum and Eastrop Park

The Vyne, a National Trust property, was another highlight. This Tudor mansion, surrounded by lush gardens and woodland, offered a tranquil escape.

Basingstoke To Stonehenge

The distance from Basingstoke to Stonehenge is approximately 30 miles via road, taking approximately 40-45 minutes to travel depending on traffic conditions. The road trip from Basingstoke to Stonehenge was like a journey through a painting of the English countryside, complete with the obligatory rolling hills and charming villages straight out of a storybook. As I bid farewell to Basingstoke, I was ready for a transformation from cityscape to countryside, with green hills and cute villages popping up along the way. I passed by delightful market towns where I could take a breather, do a spot of shopping and tucked into some classic pub grub. And keep those peepers peeled for historical landmarks and hidden treasures that add an extra sprinkle of magic to my drive. As a nature nut, history geek, and fancy a peaceful road trip, this route has a lot of something for me to looked at to soak in the charm of rural England.

The path to Stonehenge treats travelers like me to a generous helping of natural beauty, with endless fields and meadows stretching out as far as the eye can see. And just when I thought it couldn’t get any more mesmerizing, the iconic stone circle pops into view, ready to blow my mind. Whether it’s your first time like me in this part of England or a repeat visit, the excitement of getting up close and personal with this ancient and mysterious site will undoubtedly be a standout moment of your journey.

Bath

The time I spent gallivanting around Bath, checking out all the sights, was an absolute hoot! I mean, who knew history could be this much fun? It was like a crash course in time travel, but without the complicated machinery. I gotta say, learning about the city’s past really jazzed up my brain. Now I’m all about that historical swag, ready to uncover more juicy tales from the good ol’ days! 🕰️

This picturesque city of Bath, is known for its natural hot springs and 18th-century Georgian architecture. One of the top attractions I visited was the Roman Baths, a well-preserved complex that showcases the ancient Roman bathing and socializing establishments. I get to explore various chambers, learn about the history of the baths, and even sample the thermal waters.

Aside from the Roman Baths, Bath Abbey was another iconic landmark that I visited which dominates the city’s skyline. Its stunning Gothic architecture and rich history make it a must-visit for travelers. The Abbey is located next to the Roman Baths, making it convenient to explore both attractions in one trip.

The city’s delightful streets are like a runway for boutique shops, cafes, and restaurants, where you can strut your stuff and indulge in some fancy footwork – food style! And if that’s not enough, the surrounding countryside serves up some seriously scenic walking trails and the stunning Prior Park Landscape Garden, where nature puts on a show and tranquility is the main act.

“Wow, Bath really knocked my socks off with its mind-blowing attractions and experiences! I mean, talk about a place that knows how to show a visitor a good time!”

A visit to Bath wouldn’t be complete without indulging in a traditional afternoon tea at the Pump Room, overlooking the Roman Baths. I ended my day with a walk along the River Avon, admiring the Pulteney Bridge illuminated against the evening sky.

A Journey to Remember

This journey beyond London offered a tapestry of experiences, from royal grandeur to medieval marvels and timeless beauty. Each town had its own story to tell, and together they created a narrative of England’s rich heritage. Whether it was walking in the footsteps of kings and queens or enjoying the tranquil countryside, this trip was turly an ulitmate adventure.

If you’re planning to venture beyond London, I highly recommend adding Windsore, Reading, Basingstoke, Salisbury and Bath to your itinerary. They promise a perfect blend of history, culture, and charm that will leave you enchanted.

Only been to the UK once (it was in 2015- the church choir at my family church was in residence at Bristol Cathedral- so a combo of the choir, family, and friends ventured on a pilgrimage to Bristol with a few day trips to places nearby)

First stop- London (4 and 1/2 days were spent here- 2 were family fun and other 2 and 1/2 were the pilgrimage)

    1. Windsor Castle- this was the first day of the Pilgrimage (initially saw a changing of the guards, than St. George’s Chapel, and some other places in the castle)
    2. Walking Tour of London (yes, my family saw some of the same places we just saw like Westminster, but first time seeing Buckingham Palace); that night was Evensong at Westminster and the group sat in the quire–all of this the 2nd

    3. Eucharist at St. Paul’s Cathedral under the Dome, a little bit of free time- Millennium Bridge, closer view of London Eye, Tower of London (there was only time to walk around before heading to Bristol

if I say EVERYTHING that will take a while

Let’s talk about Stonehenge (my Mountain-Top moment)- just the right atmosphere and it felt like God’s Energy was pulling me in with the strong wind

Well- in May going back, but this time Ireland/Scotland (another choir trip); those not in the choir are considered groupies
