Mount Garnet is a charming township located in the Atherton Tablelands region of Queensland, Australia. Founded in the 1870s, this historic town has a rich and fascinating history that has shaped its development and contributed to its unique character. Mt Garnet, is approximately 161km south-west of Cairns and is just 45km away from the township of Ravenshoe in Atherton Tablelands. With a population of around 400 residents, it is home to a diverse community, with 35% of its residents being Aboriginal. Nestled within the mineral-rich Herberton Tin field, this town sits along the Kennedy Highway.
Heading towards Mt Garnet, I departed from the pristine surroundings of Cairns city and embarked on a truly captivating journey. I traversed through the lush tropical rainforest and fertile farmlands of the picturesque Atherton Tablelands. After a scenic three-hour drive from Cairns, I eventually arrived in the quaint town of Mt Garnet, which is situated along the renowned Savannah Way.
Mt Garnet Township
Arriving in this small town and driving down the deserted main street, there was little to behold apart from being greeted by a handful of shops, a pub, a grocery store, some antique shops, and a few old houses and buildings lining the main street, intersected by the Kennedy Highway. Mt Garnet is one of those remote outback towns that lay in obscurity, where tourists and passersby often breeze through without pausing, risking to overlook the township in the blink of an eye.
However, despite the tranquility of the township, it becomes a bustling hub during the winter season, as numerous passionate caravaners flock to the town seeking respite and recreation. They stay for a few days before continuing their journey northward towards Cairns and beyond. Some choose to extend their stay in order to take advantage of the affordable campsite fees.

Coming to Mt Garnet with open-mind, I came here to learn and explore the captivating history and scenic wonders of Mount Garnet, where the past meets the present, creating an experience I won’t soon forget!
The past
Mt Garnet, originally inhabited by the Ngarrabullgan people, the area surrounding Mount Garnet was first explored by Europeans in the mid-19th century. It was later named after a local garnet mine that was discovered in the early 1870s. The discovery of minerals, particularly copper and tin, played a significant role in the growth of the town.
The establishment of mining operations attracted an influx of settlers and prospectors to Mount Garnet. With this population increase, the town quickly developed essential services such as schools, churches, and a post office. As more mines were discovered and developed, Mount Garnet flourished as a mining center during the late 1800s and early 1900s.
So, in its heyday, Mt Garnet thrived as a prosperous mining town, primarily focused on tin extraction. The region was blessed with an abundance of minerals, including copper, zinc, and garnet, which contributed to its growth. At its peak during the 1900s, Mt Garnet stood as the second-largest inland town in the area, with Charters Towers being the largest.
However, as the tin-mining industry faced a downturn, accompanied by people relocating to seek new opportunities, Mt Garnet experienced a significant decline. With the collapse of the mining industry, the town slowly transformed into a deserted place, teetering on the brink of extinction. The once vibrant streets and bustling activities became echoes of the past, leaving behind a quiet and sleepy atmosphere that characterizes the town today.
While the glory of its mining history may have faded, Mt Garnet still possesses a unique charm and a strong connection to the land on which it stands. The tranquil surroundings offer respite from the hustle and bustle of city life, inviting visitors to embrace the serenity of the natural world. Exploring the dry sclerophyll forests, abundant with native flora and fauna, is a delight for nature enthusiasts seeking a peaceful escape.
Although there may be minimal present-day activity in Mt Garnet, the town’s rich past and cultural heritage provide fascinating glimpses into its historical significance. Visitors can uncover captivating stories of resilience and perseverance, as well as gain insight into the lives of the Aboriginal community who have long played an integral role in the town’s fabric.
The present
The mining industry in Mount Garnet faced its fair share of challenges over the years, including fluctuations in global metal prices and environmental concerns. Despite these obstacles, the town managed to adapt and diversify its economy by exploring other industries such as agriculture and tourism.
Today, Mount Garnet thrives as a picturesque rural town that welcomes visitors from near and far. Its rich mining history can still be seen in the remnants of old mine sites and heritage buildings that dot the landscape. The town also offers a range of outdoor activities for nature enthusiasts, including exploring nearby national parks and reserves.

Warrumu Swamp:
The charm of the town lies in the serene ambience and the captivating Warrumu Swamp situated on the eastern outskirts. At certain times, this swamp comes to life as it becomes a habitat for a multitude of black swans and showcases breathtaking exhibitions of water lilies. Furthermore, this town holds great appeal for avid geology enthusiasts, boasting a few active sites. Even today, it continues to attract gold prospectors and gem aficionados.
Mt Garnet Races and Rodeo:
The highlight of the year in Mt Garnet is undoubtedly the annual Mt Garnet Races and Rodeo event, which takes place in the month of May. This much-anticipated occasion sees a remarkable transformation of the town, as approximately 3500 individuals flock to attend the thrilling racing carnival. Accommodation options such as the caravan park, cabins, and motel rooms are in high demand, often fully booked during this period. As a result, it can be quite a challenge to secure a spot in town.
One of the remarkable aspects of the Mt Garnet race environment is the lively social atmosphere that prevails during this time. With many owners and trainers residing at the race track throughout the event, the community spirit is truly palpable. This longstanding tradition of camaraderie remains an integral part of the Mt Garnet race experience to this day.

These vibrant markets showcase local produce, arts, crafts, and homemade goodies. It’s the perfect opportunity to support local businesses and artisans while enjoying a lively atmosphere.
From my observations, it is evident that there are a few remains of the mine that still serve as a testament to the scale of the operation during the turn of the century. Despite the limited remnants, they provide sufficient evidence to comprehend the magnitude of the mining activities that once took place. What truly captivates me, however, is the way of life embraced by the local residents. I am compelled to understand the reasons behind their choice to reside in such a small outback village, and what factors attract them to this unique lifestyle.
However, this area is a haven for a person dreaming of a new life. A life away from the rat race of work, demanding careers and simply trying to survive day-to-day living as they try to save their pennies for a typical Australian retirement.
As I watch the sun sets over the quiet landscape, Mt Garnet offers an idyllic setting for stargazers to marvel at the vast expanse of the outback sky. Its remote location and lack of light pollution create the perfect conditions for observing the celestial wonders that adorn the heavens above.
