Luncheon at tree-top restaurant
Tucked away on a secluded headland among the coconut palm and eucalyptus trees on a private nature reserve overlooking the Great Barrier Reef is Thala Lodge. Renowned for its eco-friendly resort, Thala Lodge offers a genuine connection with nature. This enchanting place also serves as an excellent venue for luncheons and dinners, making it a must-visit destination for travelers seeking a luxurious and immersive getaway while also being open to day visitors.

While taking a leisurely drive along the Cairns suburban northern beaches, we arrived at Palm Cove close to lunchtime. Despite the numerous enticing restaurants and cafes in the area, I made the decision to explore a less frequented option for our meal. Thala Lodge, renowned for its exquisite lunch menu, captured my thoughts. Situated between Cairns and Port Douglas, this establishment is esteemed for its fine dining experience. Without hesitation, we embarked on a 45-minute journey north to Thala Lodge, reveling in the stunning vistas along the Captain Cook Highway, also known as the Great Tropical Drive.
Finally, upon reaching Thala Lodge, we parked our vehicle at the base and ascended a steep incline to the main entrance of the resort. Subsequently, we ascended the winding staircase to the Osprey Restaurant. Situated on a secluded promontory, the Osprey Restaurant offers al fresco luncheon with sweeping vistas of the forest canopy and the Coral Sea. The scenery was undeniably awe-inspiring. As we took our seats, we were greeted not only by the amiable staff, but also by the avian inhabitants of the treetops, enhancing our luncheon experience. I still find it surreal how fortunate we were to immerse ourselves in the serenity of the surroundings in such an idyllic location overlooking the Coral Sea.

Immediately, we placed our drink orders and swiftly made our selections from the menu for our lunch. The restaurant prioritizes the display of local ingredients and offers a diverse array of options to cater to all preferences. While awaiting our drinks, we leisurely reclined, taking in the picturesque views before us, gazing out towards the reef and the rainforest, visible above the canopy of trees.

It wasn’t long before we found ourselves savoring a diverse selection of wines and champagnes, complementing our delectable and nutritious meals. The dishes boasted a variety of meticulously prepared components, all crafted in-house. They were not only visually vibrant but also exceptionally flavorful, enhancing our enjoyment of the Coral Sea vistas and the backdrop of the MacAlister Range, which together created an unspoiled setting. The experience was remarkably tranquil, allowing for the full appreciation of both the surroundings and the company. Such a location, an exhilarating privilege that cannot be replicated anywhere in Far North.

After our satisfying midday meal, we made our way to the pergola located at the opposite end of the building, offering a southern view towards Palm Cove, with Double Island visible in the distance. It was there that we indulged in a few additional glasses of champagne before leisurely returning to Cairns.

To fully maximize your experience at this location, I suggest strolling down to the exclusive private beach. This secluded stretch of coastline offers privacy and solitude, serving as an ideal introduction to the area.

For those with an adventurous spirit, the township of Port Douglas lies just a 15-minute drive north of Thala Lodge, offering further exploration opportunities.
