I have a deep appreciation for traveling across America. The country offers a remarkable fusion of ancient history in the South, bustling modern cities in the North, and the rugged charm of the wild west and desert in between. Over the past 15 years, I have been a frequent visitor to various parts of the United States, finding each visit exhilarating and enjoyable. America’s diverse array of destinations caters to all kinds of travel preferences. My visit to Seattle was particularly memorable, adding to my rich travel experiences in the country.
Seattle history
Seattle’s history is a rich tapestry of innovation, expansion, and diverse cultural influences. The city’s story begins long before the arrival of European settlers, as it was inhabited for thousands of years by Indigenous peoples. In the mid-19th century, the Denny Party established the first European settlement in what is now downtown Seattle. The city’s development was significantly boosted by the Klondike Gold Rush in the late 1800s, turning it into a center for trade and commerce. The 20th century brought continued growth and transformation to Seattle. The city became a hub for the aerospace industry, with companies like Boeing leaving an indelible mark on its economy and culture. In more recent decades, Seattle has been at the forefront of technological innovation, serving as the birthplace of companies like Microsoft, Amazon, and Starbucks. This has led to rapid development, urbanization, and a shifting demographic landscape.
Seattle today
Today, Seattle is renowned for its thriving tech scene, vibrant arts and music community, and its breathtaking natural surroundings. With a history shaped by diverse influences and a spirit of innovation, Seattle continues to be a dynamic and compelling city with much to offer.
My journey
After a few months of traversing through the picturesque landscapes of Europe, immersing myself in the rich tapestry of history and culture, the time had finally come to journey across the Atlantic to the vibrant city of Seattle. My adventure began with a flight from the bustling metropolis of London to the sun-kissed shores of Los Angeles, where I savored an overnight stay, taking in the captivating blend of urban energy and laid-back coastal charm before embarking on the next leg of my voyage to the enchanting Pacific Northwest.
With just two hours flight from Los Angeles to Seattle, I arrived safely just after midday. As I made my long walk to the terminal exit with my travelling suitcase on one hand and a backpack on the other, I was warmly greeted by my host and friends of 15 years – Dennis and Donna. Like all major international airports, winding through long corridors, stairways and escalators are a major part of the travelling experience at the airports. Indeed, airports are places where I get my adrenaline rush from walking exercises. Though I had a light snack during the flight, I needed to give my digestive system a work-out as we headed towards the car. We drove just a few kilometers away from the airport, ending up at Starbucks for a late lunch – this meant that we were going to have a very light dinner that evening, as Donna and Dennis are very conscious of their dietary intake. Having a light dinner in the evening after traveling for weeks before arriving in the United States was just what I needed for a good night’s sleep.
My time in seattle
Having visited Seattle several times before, this occasion allowed me to spend more quality time with my friends who now call Seattle home, following many years residing in various parts of California. Donna and Dennis, both retired as directors from their company, are known for their preference for exquisite entertainment. Our experiences ranged from fine dining at lavish restaurants to enjoying local cafes and takeout spots across Seattle. Among my preferred dining spots in Seattle is its picturesque waterfront. This area offers a diverse range of attractions, from cargo ships and state ferries traversing Puget Sound, to upscale hotels and exceptional seafood eateries. In between, one can find an array of shops, from gift stores to bookshops, as well as a grand Ferris wheel and the Seattle Aquarium, alongside takeout dining options. During our visit, we savored takeout meals at the waterfront park while reveling in the breathtaking views and savoring delectable seafood dishes. For me, there are few better ways to unwind than this, and it perfectly encapsulates the experience I sought while in Seattle.
The following day, as my friends had few commitments for the next couple of days, even though both were retired, it offered me the opportunity to engage in personal activities. It was an ideal moment to explore the local parks and trails outside the city areas, which are often overlooked by tourists. I was genuinely delighted to discover more of the city’s parks and gardens using one of their vehicles. Similar to all the destinations I have visited, I relied solely on public transportation as my mode of travel, which proved to be an excellent way to familiarize myself with the area. This time, I had the freedom to drive around without adhering to any schedules or hectic itineraries. My aim was to uncover hidden gems that are not prominently featured in guidebooks, and Seattle certainly has no shortage of them. Navigating the streets at my own pace was a rewarding experience.

On my final day in Seattle, my friends took me to Mt. Rainier National Park. I must say, it one of the other most beautiful places I visited in Seattle. Donna and Dennis urged me to escape the beauty of the city’s most scenic tourist attractions and head to this place. I must say, this was the very best part of Seattle. I would highly recommend anyone not to miss this place; it is truly wonderful. It is a “must-see” place in Seattle. This park offers breathtaking views of trees, flowers, and animals too. To experience the beauty of this nationally preserved outdoor area was truly an experience of its own.
