my journey to the island
After landing at Brisbane Airport, I exit the airport terminal with my camera backpack and weekend travel mini-suitcase. I proceeded directly to the train bound for Brisbane Central station. To travel to North Stradbroke Island from Brisbane, I had to catch a ferry at the Cleveland Ferry terminal. From Central station, I boarded the ClevelandLine train to Cleveland station, the final stop. Upon arriving at Cleveland train station, I transferred to a bus headed for Stradbroke Ferry terminal where the ferries depart from the suburb of Cleveland and arrive at Dunwich on the island. After obtaining my ferry ticket, I boarded the ferry. The journey took around 25-minutes, offering scenic views of Moreton Bay along the way. The ferry ride was exceptionally pleasant, delivering me to the heart of one of Straddie’s primary townships – Dunwich. I was pleasantly surprised by the affordability of the ferry ride and the amiable nature of the fellow passengers.

As soon as I stepped off the ferry, once I arrived at Dunwich, I was totally removed from everydays daily life. I was blown away by the island’s natural beauty, including stunning beaches. I felt like I was walking onto some of the pristine islands I have visited in the Caribbean. Without a doubt, this place was absolute delight and nothing compared to what this island had in store for me. It was welcoming and knowing that this island was going to be my mini vacation getaway from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
At the ferry terminal, I was greeted by the driver I had pre-arranged for my arrival on the island. Mr. Ted, a local indigenous man who had spent his entire life on the island, was there to meet me. In my travels to various developing countries and destinations around the world, I make a point of engaging locals as my guides or drivers. I have always held the belief that locals possess a deeper understanding and can offer more authentic insights than catered tourist information. As the locals say, setting foot on Straddie is a journey back in time – a way to “slow down”. In just a few moments on the island, I could feel the unique ambiance, anticipating a truly serene and enchanting escape.
Though driving around the island was a straightforward task, Ted generously offered to chauffeur me through the low-lying areas and higher elevations, where whales can occasionally be sighted along the shores at certain times of the year. We traversed nearly the entire length of the island, from astonishing cliffs to stunning ocean vistas and secluded, pristine beaches. The experience was truly awe-inspiring, with incredible views at every turn.
The following day, in order to inject a sense of thrill into the experience, my guide arrived at my accommodation to accompany me on an excursion to remote trails frequented exclusively by locals for camping. The area is a protected sanctuary, rendering Straddie a haven for campers, yet it is dotted with numerous privately-owned beach shacks and land, all belonging to Ted’s family. These locations remain largely undiscovered by tourists, as they are predominantly accessible only to private individuals. Guided by Ted, I not only had the opportunity to marvel at the area’s natural splendor and explore the island, but also gained a rare insight into its history, current state, and future prospects. Mr. Ted introduced me to some of the sacred sites where the local indigenous communities conduct private ceremonies and dances during special occasions. Despite being just a few hours away from the city of Brisbane, the tranquility of the place transported me to an entirely different realm.
To end my island getaway, I was driven to a lookout that over-looks out to the wide open blue ocean and the white sandy beaches that went for miles and miles away, as far as eye could see, totally untouched was just mesmerising. It was absolutely beyond my imagination, how such place could exist here and yet only few come to enjoy it. I just totally fell in love with this island and the people. Without any hesitation, I took a Gorge walk from Point Lookout and it certainly delivered what I wanted to see. I was totally gobsmacked by every turn that lead out to breathtaking views or jaw-dropping cliffs just metres away from the boardwalk. am so glad I did it.
Straddie, short for North Stradbroke Island, has been an extraordinary destination within my travel itinerary. Situated just off the coast of Brisbane, this breathtaking island has offered me a unique and authentic experience that I simply couldn’t overlook. The tranquility and beauty of Straddie have been unparalleled, providing me with a much-needed escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
