For a holiday to remember, I ventured into Australian State and Territory Borders.
A Memorable Journey: Exploring the Beauty of Australia on an Epic Road Trip
After taking the leap to live in Australia, my mates were absolutely bonkers about road trips. They were adamant that I’d be missing out on heaps by flying or taking the train. And let me tell you, they were spot on! It was back in mid 1980’s, a year after settling in Australia, when I thought, “Why not take a whirlwind road trip that crosses state borders and territories from Cairns, in Queensland, all the way to Adelaide, South Australia, passing through New South Wales, Australian Capital Territory, and Victoria?” This was shaping up to be the road trip of a lifetime, mate! It turned out to be a ripper of an adventure, showing off some of the country’s finest natural wonders and attractions. Mind you, I even considered swinging by a few towns along the way that were completely new to me. The journey took me from one end of the spectrum to the other – from the laid-back bliss of tropical paradise, to the semi-arid and arid Outback, to buzzing big cities, to the rolling hills and farmlands, and finally to the pristine beaches and coastline. Fair dinkum, it was a true-blue adventure!
The road trip was filled with unforgettable experiences. I encountered the unique wildlife of Australia, from iconic kangaroos and koalas to exotic bird species. The diverse landscapes offered a kaleidoscope of colors and textures, from the lush greenery of the rainforests to the rusty red hues of the Outback. Exploring the lesser-known towns introduced me to the local culture and traditions, providing a glimpse into the heart of Australia.
One of the highlights of the journey was witnessing the sunset over the vast expanse of the Outback. The shifting hues of the sky mirrored the ever-changing scenery below, creating a breathtaking spectacle. As I ventured further, the contrast of bustling cities against the tranquility of rural areas painted a vibrant picture of Australian life.
The road trip also allowed me to savor the regional cuisine, from savory meat pies to fresh seafood delicacies. Each stop offered a new culinary adventure, reflecting the rich flavors of the diverse regions.

There’s something undeniably special about hitting the open road and embarking on an adventure in your trusty vehicle. The freedom to chart your own course, stop wherever and whenever you please, and truly immerse yourself in the journey is an experience like no other. While traveling by plane or train certainly has its conveniences, there’s a unique charm to road trips that can’t be replicated.
The ability to witness ever-changing landscapes unfold before your eyes, from rolling hills to majestic mountains, tranquil lakes to bustling cities, is a captivating and enriching experience. Ultimately, the journey becomes just as significant as the destination, and the sense of freedom and adventure that comes with a road trip is unparalleled. So, as the miles stretch out before you, the open road beckons with endless possibilities, making the journey itself an integral part of the adventure.
On this epic road trip, I found it more enjoyable on long road trips compared to flying or taking the train for several reasons:
- Freedom and Flexibility: When driving, you have the flexibility to stop whenever you want, explore off-the-beaten-path locations, and change your itinerary at a moment’s notice. This freedom can lead to unexpected adventures and serendipitous discoveries.
- Scenic Routes: Driving allows you to take scenic routes that may not be accessible by other means of transportation. The opportunity to witness stunning landscapes, charming towns, and natural wonders can greatly enhance the journey.
- Personalized Experience: Unlike flying or taking the train, driving provides a personalized and intimate travel experience. You can bring your own music, snacks, and travel at your own pace, creating a comfortable and familiar environment.
- Bonding Time: Long road trips offer an excellent opportunity for bonding with travel companions. The shared experience of navigating the open road, engaging in conversations, and creating lasting memories can strengthen relationships.
- Exploration: Driving allows you to make impromptu stops and explore attractions that you may come across unexpectedly. This sense of exploration and spontaneity can add depth to the travel experience.
Reflecting on this extraordinary road trip, it’s clear that Australia holds a treasure trove of natural beauty and cultural heritage, waiting to be explored and cherished.
