Welcome to Island Paradine. Vanuatu, capital of Port Villa, is an archipelago located in the South Pacific Ocean, has a rich and fascinating history that is deeply intertwined with the dynamics of colonization and indigenous resilience. The islands were first inhabited by Melanesian people, who settled there around 500 BCE, establishing complex social structures and cultural traditions. European explorers arrived in the 17th century, and by the late 19th century, both France and the United Kingdom had established colonial presences in the region.

My journey
I first visited Port Villa, the capital of Vanuatu, in the early 90s for holidays, an adventure that had been on my bucket list since childhood. I have decided to return to re-visit this beautiful island and explore what it is like today.
My journey from Sydney to Vanuatu was filled with anticipation and excitement. Vanuatu, an enchanting island paradise nestled in the crystal-clear waters of the South Pacific Ocean, beckons travelers with its pristine beaches, lush rainforests, and vibrant culture.
After a comfortable flight from Sydney to Port Vila airport, I was greeted and picked up by my hotel driver back to the accommodation. The warm breeze and the scent of tropical flowers in the air immediately made me feel like I had truly arrived in paradise. As we drove through the lush landscapes, I couldn’t help but admire the vibrant colors of the local flora and the stunning views of the azure ocean in the distance. The anticipation of experiencing the rich culture and natural beauty of Vanuatu filled me with excitement, and I knew that this trip was going to be an unforgettable adventure. Upon reaching the accommodation, I was warmly welcomed by the friendly staff, and I couldn’t wait to begin exploring all the wonders that this enchanting island had to offer.
After a swift check-in I was ready for my next seven days of adventure and exploration. Port Villa, the nation’s capital, serves as the main entry point to Vanuatu, and it is where most visitors arrive. It is located on the main island of Efate, which sits at the edge of a magnificent natural harbor filled with corals and marine life.
I was truly greeted by the warm, tranquil embrace of the island’s welcoming atmosphere. The gentle sea breeze carries the scent of tropical flowers, creating a sense of serenity that instantly puts one at ease. From the bustling markets showcasing local crafts and delicacies to the breathtaking views of majestic waterfalls and volcanic landscapes, there is an abundance of experiences waiting to be discovered.

There is so much to LOVE about Vanuatu. The charm of the locals, the breathtaking natural beauty, and the friendliest people on earth truly make it the “Island in Paradise”. What I particularly adore is the warm welcome extended by everyone. It’s as if you’ve landed on a completely different planet. Despite its small size, this island offers a plethora of options for a laid-back holiday that also offers great value for money. More and more tourists are fortunate enough to stumble upon this hidden paradise island. Among the many delightful discoveries I’ve made is the affordability of everything, especially the exotic local produce. It’s a safe destination to travel to, free from the heavy crowds and the constant haggling that one often encounters in heavily populated Asian destinations. It’s no surprise that tourists flock here in large numbers, especially on mega cruise liners. Vanuatu’s allure is undeniable and continues to captivate visitors from near and far.
My accommodation
Leaving all my traveling bags and suitcases unpacked, I took a late evening stroll along the waterfront after a relaxing afternoon. Staying in this seaside hotel in the heart of Port Villa, means that everything was within walking distance. I was facing the waterfront with a private walled balcony overlooking the best view in town. It was just surreal. Yes, the view from my hotel room was undoubtedly a “million dollar” view and unlike most places in Australia, most million dollar views come with a price tag. As I looked out of my hotel balcony, my eyes immediately connected to this magnificent view of the island with a glittering sunrise, just like a magnet. It certainly created an atmosphere of a perfect holiday destination and I was certainly in my glory. It was truly an amazing experience every time I looked out of my hotel room.
Stroll and explore
Like many South Pacific islands, Vanuatu offers a laid-back, relaxing atmosphere that allowed me and visitors to effortlessly immerse ourselves in the island time. From donning casual clothes and thongs to enjoying leisurely strolls in the evening, the warmth of the locals creates a sense of familiarity and belonging, making it easy to embrace the friendly vibe of the place. Even within a few hours, it’s evident that the people of Vanuatu are delightful, friendly, and exude happiness—a perfect introduction to what promises to be an unforgettable adventure.
The charm of this safe holiday destination extends beyond the warm hospitality, with its inviting beaches, top-notch restaurants, and laid-back bars that ensure a delightful experience without an overwhelming bustle. The maturity and well-behaved nature of the locals add to the appeal, creating an atmosphere that feels just right. For me, settling into the welcoming embrace of Port Villa feels natural, and the fond memories of the island have only been reaffirmed with this visit, just as they were during my previous trip years ago.
My island paradise experience

I began my Vanuatu experience by taking time to visit the local market and it was truly fascinating. The vibrant atmosphere, rich with the scents of exotic spices, colorful tropical fruits, and handcrafted goods, created an unforgettable sensory experience. Wandering among the bustling stalls, I couldn’t help but be captivated by the friendly exchanges and lively conversations of the local vendors, each one eager to share stories and local knowledge. It was a wonderful opportunity to immerse myself in the culture and traditions of Vanuatu, gaining a deeper understanding of the community’s daily life and connecting with the warmth and hospitality of the local people. The diversity of products on display reflected the unique local heritage and creativity, making it a truly enriching and memorable experience.
Away from the markets there is always something new to explore and see. That is what I love about this place. It is peaceful but vibrant in its culture and a pick of places to go if you want a change of pace.

The next day, I took sometime to engage myself in their traditional way of life with the locals. One way of understanding the traditional or cultural way of life is visiting a Cultural Village Centre. In Vanuatu, cultural way of life is still active and strong in most of the islands. Within 10-minutes drive from Port Villa township is Ekasup Cultural Village Centre. This is the closest where you get to know their way of life where proud villagers share their centuries-old customs, crafts, music and stories. Cultures and traditional way of life is very different throughout the world and that is why I find it very fascinating and interesting.
land diving
After spending a few delightful days immersing myself in the vibrant culture and bustling streets of Vanuatu’s capital, Port Vila, I felt compelled to embark on an exhilarating detour, seeking out the hidden treasures that this enchanting island paradise has to offer. Departing from Port Vila, a brief and scenic flight transported me to Pentecost island, a veritable jewel among the 83 islands comprising the South Pacific nation of Vanuatu.
As the plane descended, revealing the lush, verdant landscape of Pentecost, I was struck by the idyllic beauty that unfolded before me. The islanders’ way of life is rooted in the tranquility of small rural villages, where they sustain themselves through subsistence agriculture and the cultivation of valuable cash crops. Wandering through these villages, it became evident that many of the hillside communities have remained blissfully untouched by the influences of the modern world, preserving a way of life that feels timeless and steeped in tradition.
Pentecost’s allure extends beyond its picturesque villages, as the island is blessed with some of the most breathtaking natural scenery that the region has to offer. The undulating hills, cloaked in vibrant greenery, and the crystalline waters that embrace the coastline, create an otherworldly backdrop that seems to transcend time itself.
However, it is the age-old tradition of Land Diving that truly captivates the soul. This mesmerizing display of courage and ancestral customs has drawn visitors from far and wide, eager to witness this awe-inspiring spectacle. As I observed the daring divers ascend rickety wooden towers, only to plunge earthward with unwavering determination, I was overcome by a profound sense of reverence for the island’s rich cultural heritage and the enduring spirit of its people.
In truth, Pentecost island has woven an indelible tapestry of natural wonders, cultural richness, and unforgettable experiences, leaving an imprint on my heart that will forever beckon me back to its shores. Yes, Pentecost Island has become famous throughout the world for being the spiritual birthplace of the extreme sport of bungee jumping. This land-diving is a ritual since time began which occurs between April and June.
In witnessing this magnificent land diving ceremony, I must say, it was truly an once in a lifetime experience and without a doubt that was highlight of my Vanuatu journey. It was terrifying and excruciating to watch but what a thrill it was to watch using just vines as ropes. There is no such word that I could find to describe and express the feeling of the ground vibrating under the dancing and stomping of villages and the excitement of sitting beneath the man-made tower waiting with unease for the diver to jump safely to the ground.
After experiencing this warm and generosity of Vanuatu people, it is easy to feel that Vanuatu could be one of the most beautiful and top holiday destination on earth if no exploitation of mass tourism and development is to occur.

For those who are fascinated by nature, Tanna Island is a great destination. Here, you can witness the awe-inspiring Mount Yasur, one of the world’s most accessible active volcanoes. Treks through lush rainforests and visits to traditional villages provide enriching cultural experiences.
History enthusiasts will appreciate a visit to the National Museum of Vanuatu in the capital city of Port Vila. The museum houses a rich collection of artifacts and displays that showcase the country’s intriguing past and diverse cultural heritage.
