My cruise Day
I have never experienced a cruise before and I must admit, my knowledge about cruising was extremely limited. I was one of those individuals who, in the past, have snubbed the idea of being confined to a cruise ship for an extended period. However, I have always found them intriguing.
After carefully deliberating for numerous years on the choice of a cruise destination, I ultimately made the decision to embark on my inaugural cruise around the picturesque Caribbean Islands in order to gain firsthand experience and what I thought of it. The desire to explore this captivating archipelago had been harbored since early childhood, and this voyage was destined to become a cherished memory for a lifetime. The decision-making process, however, was not one to be taken lightly, necessitating meticulous planning and coordination encompassing various facets such as airfares, cruise tariffs, accommodations, travel insurance, taxes, and entry requisites for the United States. This voyage represented an extraordinary opportunity, leaving no room for any mishaps or untoward occurrences.
Packing
Among the various aspects of embarking on a holiday, one particular task that evokes a sense of trepidation is the act of packing. However, as a well-travel traveller, I have acquired the wisdom of discerning the quintessential items to include in my luggage for all my expedition. In the event that I inadvertently overlook any indispensable item, I have developed a practice of procuring it from local establishments at my destination. Considering that my upcoming voyage involves a cruise, I have conscientiously included a selection of garments suitable for formal occasions that may arise during the course of the maritime journey.
Days before the Cruise
I traveled directly from Brisbane, Australia to Los Angeles and then proceeded to Miami, where I spent a relaxing 7-day period to overcome the effects of jetlag before embarking on a highly anticipated cruise aboard the Allure of the Seas in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Arriving in Miami few days earlier prior to the departure of the cruise was a precautionary measure as it helps mitigate potential risks stemming from flight cancellations, delays, or unforeseen circumstances. Moreover, it affords ample opportunity to explore the surrounding area and gives ample flexibility to arrange alternative transportation to the cruise terminal in the event of any travel mishaps.

Fort Lauderdale in brief
Fort Lauderdale, a city situated just north of Miami, is renowned for its abundant sunshine throughout the year, making it a highly desirable tourist destination. Similarly, Cairns offers a similar climate, with consistently warm temperatures year-round. Additionally, Fort Lauderdale serves as a prominent hub for several major cruise lines that offer voyages to the picturesque Caribbean waters, Bahamas and Mexico.

Pre-boarding Procedure
On the subsequent day, I embarked on a mini bus alongside fellow cruise-goers towards the cruise terminal. Similar to customary check-in procedures, I underwent security checks, passport verification, and luggage screening. Upon reaching the boarding point, my photograph was captured and I was presented with a cruise-card. This card included essential information such as my name, stateroom number, and deck level. It also featured comprehensive personal details, which would only be accessible via computer upon scanning the card. Finally, I stepped foot onto the impressive Allure of the Seas cruise liner. As a first-time visitor, I was undeniably captivated and awestruck by the grandeur of the ship’s interior upon entering through the main entrance.

My Time on the Cruise
Upon arriving at my designated chamber, I proceeded to unpack my travel-suitcase, which had already been delivered outside my quarters. The accommodations provided ample space for two individuals, yet I had the privilege of occupying it alone. The sliding doors of my room revealed a splendid private balcony that overlooked the vast open waters. The serene ambiance, coupled with the gentle ocean breeze, bestowed a sense of tranquility even from the comfort of my bed. For those embarking on a cruise, investing in a more spacious room with a private balcony is unquestionably worthwhile. My cabin showcasing the large room with its accompanying private balcony, was an exclusive privilege during my voyage.

Subsequently, I made my way back down to the main foyer for the imperative emergency drill. Safeguarding against potential emergencies holds paramount importance aboard any cruise ship. After the drill concluded, I retreated to my room to freshen up before embarking on an exploration of this immense floating metropolis. I head straight up to the top deck to have a clear view of the area. By the time I reached the top deck, it was already packed with passengers to catch the glimpse of the area.

As we commenced our voyage towards the vast expanse of the open ocean, a sense of serenity enveloped the surroundings. Casting my gaze upon the coastline and the city of Fort Lauderdale, I marveled at the breathtaking beauty it possessed, juxtaposed against the coastal landscapes of Cairns, Australia. The weather, although slightly overcast with a gentle breeze, held a touch of tumultuousness. Having a propensity for seasickness, apprehension gnawed at me as I contemplated how to endure this maritime expedition. Gradually departing from the port, passengers congregated on the uppermost deck, eagerly capturing a final glimpse of Fort Lauderdale and bidding farewell to spectators below, as we embarked on our journey.

As we ventured further into the expansive ocean, I proceeded to retreat indoors, as the vastness of the deep blue sea stretched out as far as the eye could see. As we slowly sailed away further into the open waters, the gilmse of the land slowly disappears. This will be a typical cruise experience that will give me a good chance to explore what there is to do on the sea.

I commenced my exploration of various sections of the cruise ship, commencing from the lower deck which served as the primary promenade area. Aboard this remarkable vessel, every imaginable facility was available. One encountered a grand shopping complex, complete with bars, cafes, souvenir shops, restaurants, swimming pools, a fitness center, sports courts, and an abundant array of entertainment areas. The sheer opulence and range of amenities on board could only be described as extraordinary. At times, I found myself transported, as if strolling within a colossal shopping precinct akin to the bustling streets of downtown Manhattan. It was an experience that truly transcended reality.
Upon this grandiose vessel, which navigates the vast seas, a multitude of esteemed passengers and dedicated crew members find solace. This maritime marvel, encompassing accommodations for over 5000 individuals, boasts an array of meticulously curated amenities and activities for both leisure and amusement. Embarking from the port of Fort Lauderdale, our voyage encompasses the enchanting destinations of Haiti, Jamaica, and Mexico. Notably, this esteemed cruise liner is thoughtfully designed with distinct “neighborhoods,” ensuring optimal comfort and minimizing the risk of overcrowding and congestion.
Upon embarking, guests are presented with a selection of seven distinct neighborhoods and more, each offering an unique experience for their leisure. As a novice cruiser, my initial focus was on familiarizing myself with the ship’s offerings, eagerly exploring and finding amusement within the various onboard amenities. Regardless of the neighborhood I select to reside in, I ensure that I maximize my time aboard this cruise ship.

Onboard the cruiseliners, guests are provided with a daily Cruise Compass, featuring a comprehensive overview of the various activities taking place. I typically adapt my itinerary during vacations; however, being a novice cruiser, I diligently peruse every aspect of the Cruise Compass. I am eagerly anticipating embarking on my voyage and discovering the delightful experiences that await me onboard!

On board the cruise, all transactions are conducted in a cashless manner. The use of physical cash and credit cards is rendered invalid throughout the entirety of the journey, with the exception of the gambling area. Instead, a cruise-card is provided to guests, serving as a replacement for cash and credit cards, allowing them to make purchases on board. In terms of dining, all meals are inclusive, providing guests with the opportunity to enjoy unlimited meals in all restaurants, with the exception of specialty restaurants where meals and beverages are charged separately in advance. However, it is important to note that not all beverages are included, apart from water, juice, and percolated coffee/tea which are provided in the dining areas exclusively.

Beverages of various kinds are readily available, ranging from non-alcoholic options to alcoholic cocktails, ensuring an uninterrupted supply catering to the preferences of avid drinkers. The presence of bars throughout the cruise further amplifies this experience, where libations become an integral part of social interaction. It is advisable to keep track of one’s consumptions and expenditure in order to avoid any surprises when settling the final bill. Days without Land
A cruise ship is specifically engineered to facilitate exploration. One of the notable advantages of opting for this mode of travel is the ability to remain in the same accommodations, while simultaneously experiencing a different city each day. It bears resemblance to the concept of teleportation, albeit with a slightly extended waiting period and the inclusion of various onboard activities for entertainment purposes.
Life aboard a vessel presents a distinct contrast to life upon solid ground. One’s perspective inevitably shifts, as all essential information becomes encapsulated within the confines of this metallic vessel. Even the perception of time and date becomes somewhat altered. Fortunately, each elevator within the ship provides a consistent reminder of the current day, serving as a testament to the meticulous attention given to their timely updates.
Labadee, Haiti
Upon departing from the shores of Ft Lauderdale, United States, and venturing into the vast Caribbean seas for a duration of two nights, we gracefully arrived at our inaugural port of call – Labadee in Haiti. Labadee, situated on the northern coast of Haiti, within the arrondissement of Cap-Haïtien in the Nord department, stands as a port exclusively catered to the pleasures of tourists. Boasting its radiant sunshine and immaculate sandy beaches, Labadee exudes an air of tranquility and indulgence. More details can be found here.

Falmouth, Jamaica
After exploring the quaint island of Labadee, we proceeded to our second port of call – Falmouth in Jamaica. Falmouth, a town situated in Jamaica, serves as the capital city of Trelawny Parish. Functioning as a bustling cruise-ship port, it is nestled between the prominent destinations of Ocho Rios and Montego Bay on the island’s northern shore. This city is renowned for its architectural marvels, showcasing an abundance of Georgian-style buildings within the Falmouth Historic District. Towards the southern region, the majestic Good Hope Estate, originating as a sugar plantation in the 18th century, stands as a testament to the island’s rich history. In the eastern direction, near Ocho Rios, the breathtaking Dunn’s River Falls gracefully descends over magnificent limestone formations, offering a mesmerizing sight to behold.

Cozumel, Mexico
Cozumel, an island situated in the Caribbean Sea off the Yucatan Peninsula, is an enchanting destination we visit following our day in Falmouth. This Mexican island boasts natural beauty and remains mostly undeveloped, serving as a popular port of call for numerous cruise ships. With its pristine beaches, friendly locals, and secure environment, Cozumel offers a delightful experience while maintaining prices that are in line with other popular tourist destinations within Mexico. During our journey through the Caribbean islands, the pristine island of Cozumel marked our final destination. From this enchanting locale, we embarked upon our return voyage to Ft Lauderdale, where our unforgettable cruise had commenced. Undoubtedly, it proved to be a truly rejuvenating holiday experience. The inherent convenience of cruising, sparing us the need for constant packing and unpacking, left an indelible impression. To my great surprise and relief, I found that sea-sickness did not mar the entirety of our cruise.
My Thoughts on the Cruise
This cruise around the Caribbean islands offers a splendid opportunity to discover a plethora of exotic destinations, each bearing the title of a “Caribbean paradise”. It grants me the chance to immerse myself in the distinct cultures of these islands, as I explore their picturesque beaches and embrace the local way of life.
Life aboard a cruise ship offers a distinct holiday experience, characterized by convenience and accessibility. Each day, one awakens to a plethora of amenities conveniently located within close proximity. Cruising across the captivating Caribbean islands not only grants the opportunity to bask in the sun’s warm embrace on exotic beaches, but also to gain insight into the local way of life on these idyllic, albeit densely populated, locales. Reflecting upon the advent of tourism, one ponders the impact it has had on these communities and whether the resulting changes have been ultimately beneficial or detrimental.
