For the past few months, I have refrained from venturing beyond the borders of Cairns city. However, I have recently made the decision to embark on a scenic self-drive tour, in order to explore the charming town of Port Douglas. Undoubtedly, the 66-kilometer journey along the Captain Cook Highway, from Cairns to Port Douglas, is considered one of the most awe-inspiring road trips in Tropical North Queensland. This picturesque route, known as the Great Barrier Reef Drive, guarantees breathtaking views of the ocean and the pristine coastline. It is, undeniably, one of the most stunning sections of Australia’s coastline. As you traverse this winding coastal road, flanked by towering forests on one side and the vast expanse of the ocean on the other, you will encounter stretches of palm-lined beaches and distant forest-clad mountains. The sheer beauty of this landscape renders this drive an exquisite experience in this captivating part of the world.

The beauty of this drive lies in its accessibility throughout the year, regardless of the optimal time to embark on this highway. This region boasts some of the nation’s most precious treasures, including the World Heritage-Listed Daintree Rainforest and the Natural Wonders of the world- Great Barrier Reef, which are located in close proximity to each other. While in Port Douglas, whether you are seeking scenic views, relaxing on the beach, or exploring the charming seaside town further, you will gain a true sense of what a tropical paradise atmosphere entails.
My journey commenced from Cairns as I made my way to Port Douglas, intentionally skirting past the usual tourist hotspots of far north Queensland. Instead, I made deliberate stops at noteworthy destinations that were truly worth experiencing. These included the captivating Cattana Wetlands, the renowned northern beaches of Cairns, the enthralling Hartley’s Crocodile Adventure Park, and the exceptional Thala-Lodge. After soaking in the beauty and diversity of these places, I finally reached my destination – Port Douglas.
Cattana Wetlands
My scenic drive began with my first stop at Cattana Wetlands, just 15 minutes drive, north of Cairns city, off the main Captain Cook Highway. Cattana Wetlands is an incredible hot spot for nature and bird lovers paradise. A hidden gem away from the busy tourist radar and little known by visitors.
As I journeyed through this picturesque landscape, I was captivated by the tranquility and serenity that enveloped the wetlands. When I was ready to peel myself off the squeaky-clean sand of Palm Cove, I drove further north of Palm Cove to Hartley’s Crocodile Park passing through picturesque Ellis Beach.

This beach is a very popular picnic spot for families as well as visitors to the region. With only a cafe and a bar on the beachfront and is the last cafe that is only accessible by public on the side of the road until the next 45 kilometres of drive. Locals say that on the weekends this roadside bar and grill and the beach, is bustling with activity, a very popular among families and beach goers.
