📸 “Johnstone’s River, Innisfail”

Leaving behind the laid-back charm of Cairns on an early morning drive, I headed south along the Bruce Highway for a tropical adventure that promised both tranquillity and thrill. My destination was the lush township of Innisfail – a hidden gem on the Cassowary Coast where rainforest meets river, and life flows to the rhythm of nature.

🚗 The Scenic Drive from Cairns to Innisfail

The journey took just over 90 minutes, winding past sugarcane fields, banana plantations, and the rainforest-covered hills of North Queensland. I made a few photo stops along the way, soaking in the early morning mist and the soft golden light. This drive alone felt like a gentle introduction to the tropical serenity that awaited me.

🌿 Why I Chose North Queensland River Tours

I joined a small-group experience with North Queensland River Tours, a locally owned company based in Innisfail. Their passion for the area and commitment to eco-friendly touring caught my attention. From the first phone call, I could tell this wasn’t just another sightseeing tour — they live and breathe the river, and their local knowledge made the experience feel authentic and immersive.

📞 Tip: Book in advance – they’re popular, and tours fill quickly!

🚤 Cruising the Mighty Johnstone River

We launched from the banks of the South Johnstone River, and almost immediately, nature revealed its wonders. The water mirrored the surrounding rainforest, and it wasn’t long before we spotted our first saltwater crocodile, lounging lazily on the muddy banks. Safe from a respectful distance, we had time to observe and learn about this iconic species in its natural habitat.

We also spotted:

  • 🐦 Azure Kingfishers darting above the water
  • 🐦 Shining Flycatchers and Eastern Great Egrets
  • 🐊 Crocodiles both basking and swimming
  • 🦤 A rare and magical cassowary sighting along the riverbank

✨ Personal Highlights

For me, the true magic of this experience was in the stillness — drifting quietly through the mangroves, listening to the forest breathe. At one point, we turned into a shaded bend where the rainforest canopy closed in above us and the only sound was a distant birdcall. It was peaceful, humbling, and grounding.

🏙️ Exploring Innisfail

After the tour, I spent time in the charming township of Innisfail. Known for its Art Deco architecture and diverse cultural mix, the town offers a slower pace that feels refreshing. I enjoyed a seafood lunch by the river — grilled prawns and reef fish — before strolling through the quaint streets lined with heritage buildings.
